Psychic Hot Lines

We've all seen the ads on TV - the psychic woman with the accent who can answer all your questions and solve all your problems.  The celebrities talking about how their favorite psychic helped them and can help you, too.

Their ads invade the quiet late night hours when you're watching old movies.  And they seem so very, very helpful.  But are they really?  And where do the people manning those phone lines come from?

I belong to several pagan chat groups and e-lists.  Like clockwork, every six months or so we'll receive a solicitation to the list for people to contract with one of the psychic networks.  I've even been told they post similar ads in the "variety papers" available at almost every supermarket in town.

They promise you loads of money for only a few hours work.  And hey, best of all, they never question your capabilities.

So, what do you get if you contract with them?  First of all, you're put on a rotation with other contractors.  But don't think all of you are equal.  These companies make money by the minute so if your calls fall below a certain average, you're put to the last on the rotation.

But, if you can keep those poor confused souls on the line for 15 minutes or more, if you can draw this out longer and longer, the rate of those phone rings increases.  The higher time allocated per call, the more likely your phone will ring immediately after you hang up.

You see, the company isn't going to give a client to someone who tries to keep the call short knowing that many of these people are desperate, and probably hurting financially.  No, the call will go to those who can keep people on the line for the most period of time.

And as for those big paychecks?  Forget it.  You're paid a flat rate per minute.  You also need to be available a certain amount per week with no distractions or interruptions.

Yes, anyone can be a psychic phone person, but would you really want to be?  True divination is a draining process.  And it should entail a certain amount of trust between the querant and the reader.

But you'll never see the querant, never be able to judge their reaction to what you're telling them.  And these are desperate people.  Various news programs have shown that many of these people would be better off by contacting various social service programs in their own communities rather than spending money they can ill afford on yet another psychic who promises a quick cure.

I'm Wiccan, and the Wiccan Rede requires that we take no deliberate action that could potentially cause harm.  To that end, I will never work for a psychic hot line nor will I recommend one to any person.  But I will help people get in touch with organizations that can help them.  And if they've placed enough trust in me to tell me what's going on, I'll stand beside and help them up should they need it.

If you believe in psychic hot lines, more power to you.  But my advise would be to figure out what you did to get into your situation, and then decide what to do to get out of it.  And if it requires asking for help, there are so many civic organizations willing to help.  Use them for they truly do have your best interests at heart.

And always look to the Divine within your own heart for guidance.  The Divine is always with you whether you recognize the Divine presence or not.
