Spreads are used to provide a variety of information.
They can be as simple as a single card drawing or extremely complex.
This last section will discuss some layouts. Try them, and others,
until you find the few that work best for you. But before we begin,
here are a few "tips" that I've seen.
Shuffling the cards:
-
Regardless of the spread, the reading always begins
with the shuffling of the cards. There are a number of methods used,
some of which I will list here. BTW, the "querant" is the person
for whom the reading is being given.
-
Always shuffle the cards a certain number of times,
whether using a prime number (one which can only be divided by itself and
one) or by a mystical number. NOTE: Per the Hoyle card company, cards
are thoroughly randomized after being shuffled 7 times, which is both a
prime and a mystical number.
-
Allow the querant to hold the cards, focusing on
the purpose of the reading. Then shuffle the cards.
-
Allow the querant to shuffle the cards until the
querant feels the deck is right.
-
When shuffling, if allowing for reversed cards in
a reading, alternate rotating half the deck each shuffle; first time rotate
the bottom half, next the top half, then the bottom half, etc.
-
Never allow the querant to touch the deck, only the
reader.
-
Don’t shuffle, just toss the cards onto a table or
other flat surface, mix them up, and then restack the deck.
Cutting the deck:
-
Cut the cards with your / the querant’s right hand,
placing the top pile to the right, and with the left hand, place the bottom
pile on top of the top pile.
-
The querant cuts the deck, and the reader places
the bottom pile on top of the top pile.
-
Cut the deck into thirds, and restack in any order;
do this several times.
Laying out the cards / choosing the cards:
-
Always lay the cards on top of a cloth, preferably
black velvet.
-
Use the top cards, and place in the order of
the reading.
-
Never allow for inverted cards; always place them
face up.
-
Never place the cards face up.
-
Count out the number of cards for the reading, indicate
the where the cards need to be placed for the reading, and allow the querant
to place the cards where they feel it is appropriate. (The cards
are laid face down.)
-
Allow querant to randomly select the number of cards
for the reading. Indicate where the cards need to be placed for the
reading, and allow the querant to place the cards where they feel it is
appropriate. (The cards are laid face down.)
-
Reverse the placement of the cards, beginning with
the last cards in the reading first.
These are just suggestions. My personal
suggestion - do what feels right for you and right for the moment.
In the end, it will probably give you a truer reading.
So, what do I do? If reading for myself,
I sometimes shuffle, but not always. And then I randomly select the
cards that feel right for reading.
If reading for someone else, I have them shuffle
the cards until it feels right for them, and have them cut the cards in
whatever manner they want. I then spread the deck out face down,
and have them randomly select the number of cards in the reading.
Once that is done, I remove the other cards, and then beginning explaining
the layout. With each card position, I have them select one of their
cards and place it face down, allowing them to invert the card if they
think they need to. Once all the cards have been placed, I ask them
to "feel" the layout and to change the cards (swap positions, invert) as
they feel necessary. I then proceed with the reading, flipping each
card as I come to it.
