By now you hopefully will have decided on the type of spell you want to do. So let’s wander out to the Magickal Purposes page for a moment. Read through the various listings to find the one that most corresponds to what it is you hope to achieve. If it is a love spell, you’ll find listings in places other than "Love …"
You may find that several different spells are needed to accomplish your goal. That’s okay; you can combine the various elements into one spell specifically crafted for your needs.
I am not going into how to craft a high ceremonial spell. These are very complex and involved and should not be undertaken by someone just beginning this path. Actually, I suspect that for some individuals, these types of spells should never be undertaken.
This lesson is on the basics of spell work. Just the basics. And it is based upon my observations and upon things I have read. If you want actual spells that are prepared for you, a number of metaphysical shops and websites can sell you these. You can buy books on the topic which will detail a spell for you.
But this lesson is designed to help you create your own spells. In the end, it increase the amount of power since it will be based entirely upon your efforts, from researching correspondences to the gathering of those correspondences, from the writing of the spell to the actual ritual and spell work. The more you put into it, the more you get out of it.
Oh, and just a note - spell work isn’t an instantaneous thing. And sometimes you don’t get what you ask for but get what the gods believe is best for you. And then, of course, are the times when the spirits of chaos have just to decided to have fun. Oh yeah, been there. <smile>
The correspondence table will indicate if there is a specific type of stone or herb / essence / oil / incense that corresponds to that desire. The heading of "Other" will indicate if there is a color (for candles), a day, deity, element or other type of correspondence that can also be used.
You don’t need to use any or all of these. Again, your mindset is the most important thing. So take sometime to determine which, if any, of the correspondences listed you’ll use.
So now that you know which correspondences you’ll use, you need to determine when you’ll do the spell. As for timing, just a brief reminder : Workings to bring things to you (or another) are done during the new, waxing, and/or full moon. Workings done for healings are usually done during the waxing and/or full moon. Banishings or to ask that things be taken away (changing traits or bad habits no longer wanted) are done during the waning moon. And the dark moon is a time of rest and reflection for personal development.
But that is just a guideline based upon the lunar cycles. Perhaps the spell requires beginning on a Tuesday with a full moon but the full moon isn’t until Saturday. That’s okay; decide which is most important to you. Also, you don’t need to do spell work at night. The day is just a good. And sometimes you just can’t wait until the timing (day, lunar cycle, astrological considerations) are just right.
Spell work always begins with the preparation of the materials. Just by reading and determining your correspondences you’ve started your spell work. It is all the efforts that you put into it.
If you are using candles, you might want to decide on the type of candle. If this is a big working, banishing something or a major self-improvement undertaking, consider using a very large pillar candle. If you plan to leave the candle burning until it extinguishes naturally, place it in a fire-proof container some place where it can’t be knocked over (or if it is, it won’t cause a fire) - like a bathtub. Otherwise, extinguish the candle each time you leave the room / your home and re-light it each time you return.
So now is the time to decide the wording of the spell. Using rhyme seems to work well since it is easier to get said. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t decide to just say what is within your heart and soul at the time of the spell casting. You can say as much or as little as you need to. What is important is to state your desired goal in a way that has meaning for you.
I have also found it beneficial to draw or simply write out my goal on a separate sheet of paper. This paper is placed under the spell workings, and at the conclusion of the spell is either burned, buried, or set aside until completion of the spell. It is just another way to visualize your goal and to raise more power to accomplish that goal. You can do this step either prior to the spell working or during the spell working ritual.
And now is the time for the ritual. You have the day and time. Make certain that you’ll not be disturbed. There is nothing like a disruption to cause a loss of energy when spell working. And when working a spell, every little bit of power helps.
As with any ritual, prepare yourself ahead of time. Gather all of your tools and correspondences together in one place that will be contained within your circle. Set up your altar. Shower or bathe, put on appropriate clothing (unless you go skyclad), and ground and center yourself. It is ritual time.
Cast your circle, call the elements and ask them to lend their assistance to your task, invite the deity(s) and ask for assistance in your task. Hold each item and visualize your energies merging with the energies of the item. Then begin. At the conclusion of the spell work, meditate for awhile as you visualize the successful completion. When done, thank the deity(s) and the elements, especially thanking them for their assistance in your spell work.
What do you do afterwards? Nothing. Thinking about it repeatedly draws energy away from the spell. So know within yourself that you have been successful. But also remember that sometimes you get not what you asked for, but rather what the gods determine is best for you.
SPELL TO OBTAIN A HOUSE
AND HOME
(Spell work done by
couple)
Correspondences Used:
Large green pillar
candle
Rose quartz stone
Piece of parchment
paper and colored pens / markers / crayons
Lavender oil
Find a place that the candle can remain undisturbed for 7-8 days. There will need to be room that you both can sit on opposite sides of the candle and join hands around the candle. Make certain that you’re comfortable. The ritual is to be conducted each morning for 7 mornings in a row at or as close to dawn as possible. Begin on a Monday.
Sitting, focus on each other. Without thinking about anything, spend several seconds just looking at the other person. Close your eyes, and slowly take deep breaths for several minutes. Concentrate upon the sensation of air coming in through your nose, and leaving out your mouth. If your body is tense, begin releasing the tension slowly, beginning with your feet. When they are relaxed, move to your ankles, then your calves, knees, thighs, hips, stomach, hands, arms, chest, shoulders, neck, and then head.
Once you know that you’re relaxed, begin to visualize creation, or to put it another way, the birth of a solar system. See the swirl of cosmic dust, feel the light of God slowly engulfing you. When you’ve got that or when you feel the warmth and light, it’s time to ground.
Feel your fingers and feet growing roots that are spreading down into the earth. Feel the roots moving through the dirt, towards the center. Feel the arms of God encompass and envelope you. Once you’ve made a connection to the earth, imagine you’re standing in a waterfall and the water is slowly showering down over you, washing away your anxieties, refreshing you and taking away all negativity. Lastly, as you finally feel cleansed and renewed, extend your arms out to the side. Feel the space around you, the very air. Visualize a protective circle forming around your body, blazing forth light and surrounding out from you. Lastly, begin to once again take deep breaths. As you do so, bring yourself back to an awareness of your surroundings. Feel the energy flows, listen to the sounds. Slowly open your eyes and give thanks to God. Together say:
"This is the day the
Lord has made;
let us be glad and
rejoice in it.
O Lord, grant salvation!
O Lord, grant prosperity."
One of you need to take the oil and rub some of it onto the candle. While doing this, think about what you need, such as money to assist you getting a house. When done, put the candle into a holder. While one is working with the candle, the other one will hold the rose quartz stone and think about what you need. Once the candle is placed into the holder, light the candle, join hands, and together say:
"Hearken to my words,
O Lord,
attend to my sighing.
Heed my call for help,
my King and my God!
To you I pray, O Lord,
at dawn you hear my
voice;
at dawn I bring my
plea expectantly before you."
At this time, you’ll do something a little different each day, spending about 5-10 minutes. On the first day, describe to each other where you would like to live. On the second day, describe the type of neighborhood you would like to live in. On the third day, discuss the type of home you would like. On the fourth day, discuss what you envision this house like in 10 years, i.e. - will there be children, will there be a garden you’ve planted? On the fifth day, describe the home you will have together. (Home, not house.) On the sixth day, talk about the home you will have when you have grown old together. On the sixth day, after the morning’s ritual, together draw a picture and/or write down what you want in your home. On the seventh day, describe your home, as you’ve written it, to the Lord. When you are done on that seventh day, burn the paper.
After each discussion (and burning the paper on the seventh day), say together:
"As money is necessary to the fulfillment of our needs, so much we ever strive to obtain it. All should be earned or not received at all. Our need is for our home. Draw, then, money to us. Let us find all that we shall need. Supply it now to meet this want. For it is said that God will provide when surely there is a need. Now is that need. Let all work well for us, and let us have sufficient so that we no longer want."
As you complete this, spend another 5 minutes quietly contemplating the flame. Then say:
"The money is now ours, and we hold it, and have it, and it fills our needs. We have received it safely and are now glad. Praise be God for His goodness.
Praise the Lord, all
you nations;
glorify him, all you
peoples.
For steadfast is His
kindness towards us,
and the fidelity of
the Lord endures forever."
On the first through
sixth mornings, extinguish the flame. On the seventh morning, let
the candle burn until it burns out. Once that is done, place the
rose quartz crystal where you can see it each day. Once you have
your home, place the crystal in a hidden spot where only the two of you
know where it is, and your home will be kept safe and happy.
This is our last lesson together. Next week’s posting will be complete ritual to use for your own personal dedication as well as for the consecration of your tools. The time and place of your dedication is of your choosing.
May each of you who has come here walk in shadow and light, and may you always feel blessed regardless of the spiritual path you follow.
