Stephen B. Utley "Dummy # 1"
Stephen B. Utley, 62, died June 3, 2003 after a courageous fight with cancer.
He was born October 29, 1940 in Fillmore, UT to Darlene and Reed Utley,
arriving before the doctor! He grew up in the Salt Lake City area
and attended Olympus High School. He was active in student politics and
sports. He married Kay Secrist in 1960 and they raised three wonderful
sons. They later divorced. He married Kathie Gunn-Mabon in 1993 and later
sealed in the Salt Lake Temple and they enjoyed a wonderful life
together. He owned and operated Metal Salvage Company in Salt Lake City,
a family business. His experience in business lead to many different things
over the years and he became quite active in the investment banking industry
helping small companies raise capital to go public. Steve was an avid outdoors
man and truly loved being outside with friends and family. He was introduced
to the outdoors as a young man in the scouting program. He was involved
with many explorations throughout southern Utah including what is now covered
by Lake Powell, in Glen Canyon. He served on the Salt Lake County search
and rescue team for many years and was instrumental in many recoveries
and rescues. He was one of very few people to have explored Neff's cave.
He served as a member of the National Ski Patrol for over 30 years at the
Solitude and Park West Ski areas, and holds several distinctions and awards.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed being in the field with his father and
then later with his sons. He was a member of the Fort Douglas Hidden Valley
Country Club for many years and served on its board of directors. He took
up running later in life and competed in many marathons, 50 mile, and 100
mile races. He ran in the 100th Boston Marathon. He enjoyed blazing his
own trail and running in the mountains and deserts of Utah. He was active
in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various
capacities over the years. He was a kind and generous man and will be missed
by many people of all walks of life. He is survived by his mother Darlene
Utley; wife Kathie Utley; children, Steve Utley, Christian (Petra) Utley,
and Jon (Kim) Utley; step-children, Nathan, Eric, and Mishia Mabon; grandchildren,
Preston, Denique, Logan, Jasmine and River Utley; sisters, Renee Hall (Aki)
Hamada, Geraldine (Gary) Litzo. His father, Reed Utley preceded him in
death. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Children's Missionary/Education
Fund at any Bank One location. Funeral services will be held Saturday June
7, 2003 at 12:00 noon in the Sandy Cottonwood Creek Stake Center, 1535
East Creek Road (7835 South). Friends may call Friday from 6:30-9:00 p.m.
at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy and
Saturday at the Church from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. Interment Larkin Sunset
Gardens.
