The History of Samuel Curtis

Samuel Curtis was born in 1805 in Champlain, New York. Samuel Curtis graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1831. Samuel left the Army after a year, He entered law and politices. He joined the Ohio Militia and he rosed to the rank of Colonel . In 1846 , Samuel Curtis was serving as the Ohio Adjutant General with the task of raising volunteers for the Mexican War,. As Colonel of the Second Ohio, he successfully accomplished his mission Taylor's line of communications open.

Samuel Curtis moved to Iowa in 1855 and he practiced law. Samuel Curtis was elected to Congress as Republican . He was serving his third term when the Civil War force he to resigned to become the Colonel of the Second Iowa Volunteer Infantry, On May 17, 1861, Colonel Curtis was promoted to to Brigade General of the U.S. Volunteers. General Curtis was commanded the large camp of instruction near St. Louis. Then General Curtis was commanded of Southwest District of Missouri from February of 1862 and then General Curtis was commanded the Army of the Southwest from February 31, 1862 to August of 1862. General Curtis defeated the confederates at the Battle of Peak Ridge Arkansas in March of 1862. Major General Earl Van Dorn was commanded of the Confederate's forces at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas.

General Samuel Curtis was promoted to Major General of U.S. Volunteers. General Curtis was commanded of the Department of Missouri until May of 1863. Then General Curtis was commanded of the Department of Kansas until February 07, 1865. Then General Curtis moved to commanded of the Department of Northwest until July 26, 1865. In 1864, the troops under General Curtis's command check Sterling Price's Missouri Raid of 1864. A battle that cost General Price's thousands of small arms, all his cannons most of his men.

After the war, General Curtis was appointed to as Indian Commissioner and he was also examiner of the Union Pacific Railroad until April of 1866. General Curtis died in December 26, 1866 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
