When They Go

Guess I wasn't too surprised
When I heard the news
But at night I can't sleep
Days I feel so confused
And all my friends tell me
"Man, you ain't been the same"
I tell them, "I know"
"It's just hard to explain"

When we were kids there were three
Now there's just two
No one can understand
What we all went through
It was like being in a war
Stuck in a foxhole
And we carry the shrapnel
That the X-rays don't show

When they go
A piece of you goes, too
It's one less person
Who can understand you

No, I wasn't too surprised
When I heard the news
'Cause I knew about the pills
And I knew about the booze
And I knew she was sinking
Out of control
She should have got help
She couldn't face it all alone

When they go
A piece of you goes, too
It's one less person
Who can understand you

When they go
A piece of you goes, too
It's one less person
Who can understand you

No, I wasn't too surprised
When I heard the news
