Before you can use the Utilities found on this site, you need an "unzipping Program' so go ahead and grab it right here! 922kb

Right click on My Computer--->click Properties--->Performance tab--->File system...then set Typical role of computer to -Network Server.( Do this if you have 32 megs of ram or more) and move the Read Ahead Optimization slider to full. On the same screen, click the cd-rom tab and set the Supplemental cache to Large and set the Optimization to Quad Speed or Higher.

Right click on My Computer--->click Properties--->Performance tab--->Graphics, set Hardware Acceleration to full.

Right click on My Computer--->click Properties--->Performance tab--->Virtual Memory, set the Min / Max to- 2 1/2 times the installed ram. (this sets a permanent swap file which will decrease / stop hard drive accessing/thrashing - change this if you have a lot of hard drive space left)

Right click on My Computer--->click Properties--->Device Manager and double click on Disk Drives, double click your drive and in the settings tab, put a check mark in- DMA. Do this for your CD ROM too (This only works with windows 95b and up) Enabling DMA will increase system performance. *Note*- this tweak may cause conflicts if your peripheral hardware does not support "Dynamic Memory Accessing" check out your hardware specs first to see if it does.

Go to Start--->Settings---Active Desktop, and un check it. (Major resource hog)

Clean out your Temporary files, go to Explorer--->Windows folder--->Temp folder and double click it. Now go up to Edit (next to file up top) and click on --->Select All, and then go over and right click on all the highlighted temporary files and delete them. If you're using Internet Explorer, go to --->Tools--->Internet Options---> Delete temporary files.

Download and installCacheman.zip(512kb) a program that allows you to optimize your system cache and increase performance .

Ok, this is a big one. Go to Start---> Run---> Type "MSCONFIG" hit OK, then click the 'Startup' tab and un -check programs you really don't need running all the time which will REALLY drag down your system. If you have a new Computer, you have a ton of stuff running like 'Virus Programs', 'Scheduling Agent', 'Task Monitor',' Watchdog Program' etc....just un- check these and leave checks in 'System Tray' and Sound card related programs and any other obvious program you need like "ADSL system commander" or a "Mouse Rate" program you're running and you'll free up more resources for your PC. At least disable Anti- virus protection while playing games to eliminate possible problems. (I just run Explorer and Systray in the background and that's it)

Speed up boot time by selecting Find /Files or Folders from the Start Menu, enter msdos.sys in the named box and C: in the look in box, then click Find. When the file appears right click it and select Properties, click to remove the check marks from the Read-Only and Hidden attributes, click OK. Now Right click msdos.sys again and select Open With from the pop up window, enter Notepad as the opening program and click OK. Under [Options] enter Boot Delay=0 or Boot Delay=1 on its own line (the 0 and 1 represent seconds) Save changes and close. Return msdos.sys to its hidden and read only state (repeat instructions in beginning to Un -check but now Re-check the attributes, close and restart computer)

Optimize Removable Disk Drive Performance - If you have an Iomega Zip or Jazz drive, you can enable write-behind caching by going to Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Performance tab>File System>Removable disk tab> then put a check in the Enable write-behind on all removable disk drives and click OK. If this causes problems simply go back and uncheck it.

If you have more than 64 megs of ram and are running Windows 98, you can optimize swap file usage by going to your System.ini file and under the [386Enh] section, enter: "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" (without the quotes) then reboot.
