WHY TECHNOLOGY?

Isaac Asimov:
"I do not fear computers. I fear the lack of them."

Why Technology? because technology is a valuable learning tool for both teachers and students.  It challenges teachers to shift their focus, to re-think their basic beliefs about education and to open up to the possibilities of redefining how they provide opportunities for students to learn. Computer networking allows teachers to exchange lesson plans and advice and debate instructional methodologies with peers around the world at the touch of a keyboard, as well as connecting with the administration and staff within their own building, leaving behind the traditionally isolated , insular classroom.  Integration of technology into Education has helped to change the way schools operate, the way teachers teach and the way students learn.  It has played a major role in shifting the role of the educator from "sage on the stage" to Guide on the Side", as well as  providing opportunities for students to take control of their own learning.

In terms of instruction, computers are invaluable for providing active, collaborative learning and assessment. Basic word processing programs allow students to become independent publishers of opinions and ideas,  and e-mail provides opportunities for "peer editing" and group review.  Interactive multi-media software and interactive tasks,  offer true inquiry-based lessons,( such as WebQuests) where students must construct and demonstrate solutions to variety of in-class projects.  Software offers students individualized learning, so while some students progress on a subject at their own pace, those who fall behind, can receive the much-needed proper interpersonal attention from the instructor. The Sophisticated graphics are especially good at helping students understand complex math and science concepts.   The computer then, lets the teacher concentrate on interaction and assistance. Computers will not replace the role of the teacher, but it should be recognized as an effective teaching tool which assists the educator.

Why technology? because wonderful things can be accomplished with its help. Technology helps motivate students, it puts them in charge of their own learning and allows them to tackle real-world issues in an active and engaging way.  It can make learning become more alive, and more relevant and help students achieve greater academic success. And of course, using and learning with and about technology will help prepare our students for the high-tech job market they will be entering in the future.

Technology can also forge a link between the home, the school and the community at large.  Parents and other community members will have access to classes, libraries, homework hotlines, school bulletin boards, community access channels and other resources to assist them in helping their children succeed in school.  Parents and teachers can communicate through personal electronic mail boxes and voice mail.

Why Technology?  because our schools thrive on information, our teachers, students, parents and community members need to be connected  and knowledgeable about the impact and  power, that  information access entails, and competent in using the technologies that help them  access it.
