THE FISHBURNS,  by John E. FISHBURN

(Text -- 105-108)

The references listed below are, for the most part, not available as they are scarce, in private hands, or are accumulations of the author. Few have actually been published. Because of this, I have, in most cases, given brief comments after the author and title data. Not included are works of a general nature Such as Pennsylvania Archives, Notes & Queries, History of Dauphin County, and others, but specific notes credit these throughout the text as they occur. In many cases, earlier or original sources preclude reference to these volumes. There are other sources cited in the text and notes which are also not included here as the information noted was pertinent for only one or two specific entries. I have purposely not -listed commercial publications of a promotional nature whose content is of no genealogical value. These are simply an expensive attempt to capitalize on the family nave and generally comprise nothing more than a compendium of telephone directory extracts. Caveat lector!

Becker, Dorothy Robertson, Some Early Related Families of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Miran Publishers, Fort Worth, 1979, 74 pages, out-of-print. Contains 22 pages on the Greiners and 4 pages on the Fishburns. A valuable source reference, particularity on the Greiners. Minor errors.

Brandenburg, Hans-Christian, an untitled genealogy in German of 90 typewritten pages on the Fischborns of the Planig area researched from the Archiv des Kirchenkresses au Nahe and Glan, Bad Kreuznach, 1984-5, of which he was the archivist. Certainly the most authentic and complete record ever produced on the subject. Sources were original church records in the area.

______."Zur Geschichte Des Geschlechtes Fischborn Aus Planig", 1986, 10 pages in German. Contains a brief history of the Fischborns of Planig, the von Fischborns, and the Catholic Fischborns of Köln There is a short history of Planig, the Gauer Hof, a list of the passengers of 10/10/1744, and the wordings of two early contract/reports. An original and valuable source.

Card Index (Fishburn), genealogical section of the State Library of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, 34 entries. References to the leaner Collection and other sources. Unfortunately, portions of the source material filed in boxes are uncataloged or missing. The cards themselves have research value.

Church and cemetery records of the Hummelstown area as researched and provided to the author by Donald E. Koons and Janet S. Welsh. These are invaluable sources of birth, baptism, marriage, and death data.

"Fishburn Chronicles", Vols.I-IV, 1945-48, 10-12 pages each with contributions by various descendants of Philip Fishburn. Records of family meetings held in Lebanon, PA, containing history, stories, and family data. Errors.

The Fishburn Family", 1964, 6 pages, on file at the Cumberland County Historical Society. Appears to be an early draft of part of Weaver's book with me small differences.

The Fishburn Family Newsletter,  No.1, July 1984 to No.6, April 1986, Ed. by Noeline and Laurie Smith, 4Z Rabaul Rd., Georges Hall, 2198 (Australia) invaluable source on Andrew Fishburn and his descendants. Careful work and creditable research.

Fishburn, Clement Daniel, a diary with no title, 1885, 168 pages. Grandson of Deterick. Detailed record of his family and his brother, Junius. Extensive material on Stonewall Jackson, the Civil War, and the South after the war is of historical interest. Clement was a soldier in the Confederate Army .

Contains data on the author's family and ancestors to the extent then known. Superseded by subsequent publications.

Copies are located in the State Library of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, and in the DAR Library, Washington, DC. 'The DAR copy has two additional pages contributed by the doper, Elvira Leah Ward of Lebanon, PA. The State Library copy was donated by Paul R. Hoffer of Millersville, PA, whose family retains the original. This is the most frequently cited record of the Fishburns It was discussed in detail in Chapter 12.

______. "Fishburn Family Record", dated 7/26/1892; longhand, 4 pages. See Appendix$8 for reproduction in its entirety.

Fishburn Will (William Kemper), Biography of  J. Philip Fishburn State Library of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, 1929. This is a condensation and arrangement of the notes for the manuscript of Philip B. Fishburn. Used as a reference in several DAR applications. I have been unable to locate a copy.

Fishburne, Charles Carroll Jr., "The Generations of Fishburnes in South Carolina", Cedar Key, FL, 1/1/1980, 3 pages. An interpretation, with letters and overnotes, in addition, 1979, to part of Edward Bell Fishburne's work, on file at the South Carolina Historical Society, Charleston. Based on four generations of Williams Careful research.

Fishburne, Edward Bell, The Fishburne Family of South Carolina (subtitle preceded by several sections on other families), an unpublished manuscript, undated and unsigned, possibly completed by his brother, William Snipes Fishburne, with a few later additions by others. Internal evidence suggests it was written in the mid-1940s. This is a valuable authority on the subject, used by researchers as the basic work. Contains the first detailed reference to Fishburns in Britain. Based on four generations of Williams.

Fishburne, Henry B., a genealogy of William Fishburn I-TV with notes, dated 2/7/1985, 3 pages, and revision dated 6/13/1985. A presentation using all known sources to update early family data.

Fishburne, Henry G., The Fishburne Family of South Carolina, Genealogical Publishing Service, St. Petersburg, FL, 1989. Certainly the best published work on the subject. Based in part on Edward Bell Fishburne's manuscript, it combines careful and innovative research to present a three generation approach to the William Fishburns together with the first attempt to trace their ancestry back to England. At this writing, copies are still available through the author at 35 Luring Place, Sumpter, SC 29150. I would certainly recommend this book to any descendants.

French, H.D., bibliography "Prepared by H.D. French, 9 Ashburton Place, Boston, Mass., for J.B. Fishburn, Roanoke, VA, 1927". This contains 27 pages of entries of the family name in various records and publications from early American times to after the Revolution. References include both English and German ancestors. This bibliography is referred to many Mmes in this book. I consider it invaluable to Fishburn research.

Hamrick Richard M. Jr., "The Ancestry and Descendants of Levi Franklin Fishburn and Mary Catharine Greiner", Staunton, VA, 10/1977, 37 pages. A carefully researched and authoritative genealogy in table and chart form of the ancestors of Deterick and his descendants. Letters, correspondence, notes, data, DAR applications, etc., from interested parties all over the USA and in Canada, England., Holland, Germany, and Australia. Koons, Hans-Walter Fischborn, Hans-Christian Brandenburg, Mary Wheeler, Elaine Piccino, Juanita Downing, Henry B. Fishburne, Henry Gordon Fishburne, Ed Houser, and Dorothy Becker.

"Microfilm No. 0021538", Mormon Church Library, Salt Lake City. Consists of 14 handwritten pages, undated and unsigned. The last recorded date is 1885. Appears to be more than one author. An interesting source but the error factor is high.

Official records: Wills, deeds, census and tax records, birth/marriage/death certificates, IGI entries, etc., obtained from various city, county, and state authorities, libraries, societies, and individuals. Many are cited in the text and notes.

"Records of Property Sold at Public Auction, Community of Planig", Vo1.I, beginning in 1780, from the Courthouse of Planig, 12/1/1788, attested to by Franz Delzert, Constable, 12/4/1931. Refers to disposition of property of Philip the Pioneer's father.

Velten, Carl, Dr. Ing., "Der Gauer Hof zu Planig", Kreuznacher Heimatblätter Nr.2/53, 2 pages. Discusses the early land transactions involving Fischborns in the Planig area before the Archive records were established. Brandenburg ascertained that for the most part his transcribing of the original records was incorrect. Now only of passing interest.
