Walter Josiah YINGST -- "The Yingst Historian" started compiling JUENGST /
YINGST / YIENGST / YEINGST names and data some time before his death in 1973. Walter was
born in Lebanon Co. PA and was buried in a family plot in the Hill Church Cemetery at
Cleona, Lebanon Co.
Johann Henrich JUENGST (John Henry YINGST) came to America from Germany in 1766 accompanied by his wife, Margrethe Katharina RHEINGANS, and two children born in Germany. He settled his family in Lebanon Twp., Lancaster Co., PA (now Lebanon Co.). They brought two sons from Germany and had eight more children, for a total of ten. My GGG-Grandfather was Abraham JUENGST / YINGST, the seventh son, who married Maria SCHMIDT / SMITH. John Henry died between 1810 and 1820 as near as we can tell and was supposedly buried at the Tabor Reformed Church Cemetery in Lebanon, although we have failed to find a present-day record of that burial in church records.
John Henry's ancestry has been traced back to Henne der JUNGESTE, b. 24 December 1399, Niedernetphen, Westfalen, Preussen, Germany. Henne was the son of one BERCHMAN. The lineage back to Henne is detailed in "Geschichte der Familie JUENGST", by Dorothea v. CHAMISSO, 1993. Walter Josiah went to Germany in 1956 and researched the family with Frau CHAMISSO'S uncle, Herr Hermann JUENGST. She picked up from his research after he died in 1958 and culminated with the book.
Walter Josiah put names and related information into several lists, as detailed in the table below. He apparently passed the lists around before his death looking for any additonal information. I acquired my copy in 1989 during a visit to PA and have had numerous inquires about names contained in the lists. For that reason, I have decided to put them into a database, which is viewable on my web site from the JUENGST...List.
Walter's list contains an entry for William YUENGST (X-063), who m. Catharina SWANGER 5 January 1769, according to records of the Reformed Church of Schaefferstown. Although most YINGSTS, etc. shown in his list descend from John Henry, some of those without parental ties may descend from William YUENGST.
Walter's data runs through about 1935 for some of the lists; however, I have chosen to cut off at 1900, except for the one entry for my own name. Also, I have chosen not to enter data at this time for these three lists: "C" -- Descendants of JUENGST women who do not bear the family name; "D" -- Third generations who do not bear the family name and "Z" -- Second generation persons whose mothers were JUENGST descendants.
There are a number of errors and/or omissions in the lists. I have corrected and/or added information from my records. In additon, I have added selected, new names and information. The lineage back from John Henry in Germany to Henne der JUNGESTE and BERCHMANN is Included in the new information.
The entries that I have added to or correced are designated by a "*" after the ID Letter/Number in the ID Column. Those where I have added completely new information are designated by "DY-#" -- that is, "DY-001", and so on. Also, some names are repeated more than once in this compilation to show multiple spouses, designated in the SPOUSE Column by "( )". A "~" in the Surname Column designates a Direct Line Ancestor.
