I have featured the 1946 Yearbook because there was a large influx of WWII Veterans during the Spring Semester of that year.
These yearbooks contain individual student photographs by class and campus
residence, faculty names and photographs with various notes and assorted class activities.
They also contain advertising. Each yearbook has an alphabetical name index arranged
by surname.
I enrolled at the University of Idaho during the Spring Semester of 1946
along with the large influx of WWII Service Members. Most of the veterans were new
to college but there were many students that had their college enrollment interrupted by
by the war and came back to finish after release from various military branches. As I had
not yet been in the service, this was certainly an interesting time for me! I was drafted
into the Army after graduation in 1950 and served in Korea; however, that
is another story.
Upon enrollment at the University, I was assigned to the Campus Club
on Sixth Street adjacent to the Idaho Club and remained
there until graduation in 1950. The Campus Club was a one story wooden
framed building constructed in 1938. It was a cooperative dormitory before WWII when it
was shut down for student occupancy. When we first occupied the Campus Club
in 1946 we ate at Lindley Hall, which was set up as a dormitory for
married students until veteran's housing was built. The Campus Club
reactivated as a cooperative dormitory soon after it opened during the 1946 spring
semester.
Many of the ex-GI's at the Campus Club didn't want to do "KP" but were willing
to pay other students to take their places. Many of us had steady jobs (when we wanted
them) as a result. We paid a monthly salary to a Buyer, Treasurer and Kitchen
Manager and hired a Cook. The University Administration did not
participate in operaton of the kitchen and dining hall. I served as Kitchen
Manager for three semesters. That was a great situation for me as I had no GI
Bill at the time and could not quite make enough money during the summer to pay all the
costs during the school year!.
I also have a contact that has The Gem for 1936,
1937 and 1939 who is willing to do lookups. If anybody wants a look up for those
years, pleseas send me an Email and I shall forward the request
to that person.
