Additional Predator/Yautja Background ]
I realize that this idea has been used many times before. Those that I have already seen made
for excellent monsters and antagonists. However, I felt they were too hollow; it never faced the
situation where the PC's may fight alongside the Predator (if you've seen the Aliens vs Predator
comics you'd know what I mean). Also, download this and print it instead of reading it on the
computer; it's a tad long.
The Yautja (the name they call themselves by) are an extraterrestrial race that has used Earth
as hunting grounds for centuries. Their entire society revolves around the hunt; however, as of
yet they have not shown intentions of invasion. They have their own twisted code of honor...
they show mercy to the young and the weak while slaughtering and beheading what they perceive
as "worthy prey." After killing their prey they usually remove part of their body as a trophy,
a cull if you will. This trophy is usually the skull of their victim. On several occasions, when
the prey has beaten the Predator, the prey is let go; other Predators will not avenge their
comrade. In fact, the Predator, should he still be barely alive, will either fall on his own
blade or be willingly executed by other Predators. The exceptions to this are known as "Bad
Blood"; this and some other terms will be explained later on, as my reasons for making it an
O.C.C. instead of an R.C.C., in the background document. Since Dark Day more Predators have
been attracted to hunt on Earth, as there are the new breed of Nightbanetm.
[Of course, these beings might also find hunting superheroes in Heroes Unlimitedtm
and magicians, dragons, and mercenaries in Rifts® just as
appealing.] The Yautja have found a way to claim the honor of their kill, which is described
here.
The Predator Warrior/the Yautja
Alignment: Almost all are aberrant, but they can be of any alignment
Attributes: I.Q.: 4d6, M.E.: 4d6+2, M.A.: 4d6, P.S.: 2d6+20, P.P.: 4d6+10, P.E.:
2d4+20, P.B.: 2d4, and Spd.: 4d6+6. Attributes are not supernatural, just powerful.
Hit Points: Same as P.E. [Standard, but I'd add +2d6 per level instead of +1d6]
S.D.C.tm: 1d4x100 Note that the creatures are not
supernatural creatures. Remember, in the movies the Predators were affected by normal weapons.
Horror Factor: 10 when wearing the mask; 14 when either the Predator removes the
mask or their true nature is found (i.e. Fearless and psychotic hard-asses.)
P.P.E.tm: 1d6x10
Natural Abilities: Keen hearing, adaptable to almost any environment, and an
instinctive hunter.
Magic and Psionics: The Yautja have no use for magic and find it disdainful; only
cowards would resort to parlor tricks. The chances of a psionic Predator are rarer than for
humans, but those that exist are unbelievably powerful, so much so that they will not hunt with
normal Yautja hunters. [For Yautja, I'd guess a 15% chance of being a minor psionic - select
four powers from one category, I.S.P.tm base of the M.E. +4d6,
and gains 2d4 per additional level. 3% are major psionics, with three powers from each of the
minor categories and two super psionic powers, I.S.P.tm base
of M.E.x2 plus 6d6 and gains 2d6+3 per additional level, and cut the number of "other" skills
and skill bonuses by half. Or, the Yautja can be a Mind Melter or Burster instead.]
O.C.C. Skills:
Speak/Literate: Yautja (98%)
Math: Basic (+10%)
Radio: Basic (+15%)
Pilot: Yautja Shuttle (60% base skill, +4% per additional level)
First Aid (+10%)
Prowl (+10%)
Tracking (+20%)
Climbing (+20%)
Land Navigation (+10%)
Wilderness Survival (+20%)
Running
W.P. Knife
W.P. Polearm
W.P. Yautja Shoulder Plasma Launcher (for bonuses, treat as W.P. Heavy Energy Weapon)
Hand to Hand: Yautja Martial Arts (see below)
O.C.C. Related Skills: Select 5 others. Select two additional skills at levels three, six,
nine, and twelve. It may seem that I am daft for not putting many, or any bonuses. The reason
for this is that these skills are those that the Yautja learns only on Earth, thus they have no
background or education for it. These skills are acquired once the Predator has lived on Earth
for a while.
Communications: Any
Domestic: None
Electrical: Any
Espionage: Any
Mechanical: Any
Medical: None
Military: Any
Physical: Any
Pilot: Any
Rogue: Any
Science: Any
Technical: Any
W.P.: Any
Wilderness: Any
Secondary Skills: Seems a bit pointless, doesn't it? The character may also
select 3 secondary skills from the previous list. These additional areas of knowledge do not
get the bonuses listed in the parentheses (big loss).
Armor: The Predator armor used for hunting humans is relatively lightweight for the
Yautja. It also has the following weapon systems and features:
S.D.C.tm [or M.D.C.tm]: 100
A.R.: 15
Weight: Varies, about 20lbs
Prowl Penalty: for someone as strong as a Predator, none. Otherwise -5%.
1. Shoulder Mounted Plasma Launcher: Fires a blast of super heated plasma. It has a 180
degree firing arc horizontally and 90 degrees up and down. It is calibrated with the mask
targeting system; +2 to strike if the mask is worn (targeting system).
Primary Purpose: Long range assault
Damage: 1d6x10 M.D.tm
Rate of Fire: Equal to the hand to hand attacks of the Yautja.
Range: 1200ft
Payload: Unlimited; connected to the suit's energy supply.
2. Forearm Blade: Also known as a "fang" because it sounds cool and fearsome. It is a
retractable blade used for its quickness and for parrying. Also use for taking trophies.
Primary Purpose: Close assault
Damage: 1d8 or 2d4 M.D.tm; two popular models.
3. Forearm Computer: The computer monitors the hunter's health, has a scanner with a
range of 100ft (role playing note for GM's: Each suit of armor is slightly different for each
Yautja; the chance of the Predator detecting the presence of any character is 1d6+20%. Roll
this in secret first, then let one of the players roll to see if they have been spotted. Then
play for a little while, so that the Predator may not have seen them, or pretends NOT to. The
players are wracked in doubt; should he run and expose everyone? Or stay, hoping the hunter
really hasn't noticed?) The computer can also self destruct, wiping out the hunter's remains
and that of the armor, so that they cannot be studied. There is also a First Aid and repair
kit. If you've seen Predator 2, you would know exactly what I mean; it is quite grisly to watch.
Primary Purpose: Information
Damage: When the self destruct sequence activated, there is a 20 second countdown. It
wipes out anything within range. For game terms, treat damage as a total explosion radius of
about 3 miles, damage of about 3d6x100 M.D.tm to anything near
the rim. If within 1 mile of the explosion, forget it [i.e. roll a new character]. The bomb is
highly localized, like a neutron bomb; the damage in the middle of the blast diameter is too
great to measure.
4. Mask: The mask allows the Predator to see in most spectrums, including a setting for
nightvision. As before, it is linked to the shoulder blaster for auto targeting. It can also
target for other weapons, giving a +1 bonus to strike. It has a built in gas mask; the Yautja
do not like to breathe the air on Earth. It also records and projects sounds, so a Predator can
communicate by piecing bits of conversation together. The Yautja operates the mask by pressing
buttons with its tusks.
5. Cloaking System: This is a sophisticated method of reflecting and polarizing light so
that the hunter is hardly visible. It is 90% efficient if motionless. At movement up to 5ft per
melee the percentage goes down considerably, depending on how well the Predator controls his
movement. To find how well it works for each Yautja moving up to this rate add their P.E. to
their M.E. This is the percentage chance of them not being seen. Any speed higher than that
creates a visible blur; treat as being fully spotted. This system is controlled by the Forearm
computer. Furthermore, water will disrupt/short circuit the system, causing a temporary
shutdown.
Weapons:
Yautja Spear/Rapier: Only the most experienced of the hunters can wield this weapon well.
Many are retractable to a length of about 2ft. On one end is the blade, with which the Predator
slashes its prey to bite size pieces. The other end shoots a web with razor sharp lining that
cuts the target as well as disabling him. Roll to strike as normal. The victim requires at least
one full melee (i.e. the round he was shot in and another round to get free) to free himself.
After that, the net is so tight it needs the help the help of an outsider to free him. The net
does 1d6 M.D.tm for the first attack the victim is entangled;
each attack after that does a additional 1d6 (i.e. for the second attack it does 2d6
M.D.tm, for the third it does 3d6 M.D.tm).
Spinning Blade: Also called a "saucer," it is a returning circular disc of pain and misery.
It's used mostly for ranged combat, but it can also be used in melee combat. It does 3d6 M.D.tm
and may strike twice (once when it is incoming, then when it returns).
Yautja Martial Arts:
A ferocious fighting form imitating some mean bastard of an animal on the Yautja's home world.
Attacks: 4
Bonuses: +6 strike, parry and dodge.
Damage:
Punch: 2d6+P.S. bonus
Kick: 2d8+PS bonus
Tackle/Pounce: 2d8+P.S. bonus, counts as two attacks, and the victim suffers knockdown.
Throw: 1d6+P.S. bonus
Head Butt: 1d6+P.S. bonus
[The editor would add +1 attack at levels four, eight, and twelve. He'd also cut the bonuses to
+3 at first level, and add +1 to strike, parry, and dodge at levels three, seven, and eleven,
and add a +2 to pull/roll with punch/fall at levels two and six. Then he'd give paired weapons
at level five, entangle at level six, a critical strike on 18-20 at level nine, and a death
blow at level thirteen. This would round it out to make it a full-blown hand to hand combat
skill.]
Description:
The average Yautja is 7 to 8 feet tall, coming in at around 300 to 400 pounds. Their skin is
thick and mottled, and is resistant to temperature. Their foreheads are large, with bony
ridges on the side. Their mouths are surrounded by four tusks. Several older hunters have found
they could serve hor d'eurves on their tusks. Their hair resembles dreadlocks. On their forehead
is a mark of heritage. This will be explained later, in the second part of the Predator
background. On a few occasions, a worthy prey is given the mark if he shows courage and honor
on the Yautja's level.
