The Cowboy props on the Action
Range are now gone. We tried to salvage them when we took them
down, but unfortunately the weather and termites
had degraded them to the point that we could not reuse them.
So...we need to start thinking about what to replace them with.
I'll have to coordinate with
the other users of the range as what ever we do, we have to make sure
everyone can either use them, or we will have to make our stuff
portable.
Keep checking this web site and I'll be posting news as it develops.
If anyone has an idea for a prop, please let me know via e-mail.
Old Tucson Studios is a SASS Friendly Place!
TA Chance, Mist Chance and I were invited to a meeting with the Old
Tucson Studios management (John Shaffer AK Town Mayer, SASS # 4981,
Pete Mangelsdorf SASS # TBD, and Marie Demarais SASS # also TBD).
The meeting concluded with a standing invite to current SASS
members to
come on in for free. Check out their web site: Old Tuscon Studios
The following are the rules to follow:
1)
Members must present a current SASS ID card.
2)
Members must be wearing a SASS badge.
3)
Members must be in period costume.
4)
No live ammunition will be allowed in the Park. Dummy rounds in gun
belts will be allowed provided that the primers are dimpled and/or the brass is
drilled.
5)
Guns will be allowed provided that they are unloaded and safety checked at
Guest Relations by Security , MOD, or Guest Relations supervisor.
6)
No alcohol may be consumed by a SASS member wearing firearms.
7)
SASS rules apply.
8)
Some special events will be excluded.
So after the match lastSunday, several of us went to Lod Tucson Studios
to enjoy the ambiance. Pete (SASS # Pending) and John (Town Mayer
SASS 49814)
were there to greet us and take advantage of the opportunity to train
personnel how to clear a revolver. We went in for free and had a
chance to watch a gun fight and
walk around and really enjoy the sights. It was really fun
watching the "tourists" trying to figure out who and what we were.
I highly recommend going to Old Tucson Studios in costume and enjoying
the sights! It is a great place to go after a hot match to cool
down with a cold sasparilla or some other
frosty beverage.
Notice:
Things are continually changing at Tucson Rifle Club. The club is
growing in popularity, as are the various types of tactical or action
sports. As a result, there are some new clubs
shooting at TRC
that use the same bays as the Cowboy Shooters. On the good side, this
provides a greater incentive to Arizona Game and Fish to fund
improvements to the range
that we use. On the down side, we have to
make some accomodations for the other clubs. One of the changes that
we have to live with is the removal of all steel from the bay
into a
fenced in area. The steel is to be locked up when not in use to
prevent unauthorized use and provide a single place to store the
targets.
The movement of that much steel for each match is no
easy task, so I am requesting assistance in range setup
and tear down for each match. If you can help, and
even have a
dolly or some other means of moving steel please bring them to the
match. We will begin range setup at around 7:30 am, and will tear down
the range immediately
after shooting is completed, while scores are
being entered into the computer. For those that desire to go out and
practice, TRC will require you to be a TRC member, and you
will have
to check out a key from the range office to open the gate. You will
have to put all targets back into the fenced in area once you are done.
Another
question that comes up on a regular basis is "Why are the targets set
at a minimum of 7 yards?" This is to comply with a Fish and Game
safety requirement that the minimum
range for steel targets is 7
yards. Since Game and Fish owns the range, and TRC manages it for
them, we must comply with Game and Fish's requirements. Strangely enough, 7 yards
is also the minumum range recommended by SASS...
We shoot the 3rd Sunday of every month and 5th Sunday some months at Tucson Rifle Club
about 20 miles west of Tucson, AZ
Our match times are:
Registration 8:00 am
Match: 9:00 am
Match Fees are:
$7.00 for Match
$3.00 for Open
(Shooth the Match a Second Time!)
Juniors shoot for
free!
One does not need to be a member of SASS or Tucson Rifle Club to shoot with us, but we certainly appreciate TRC
members. Membership in TRC tells Game and Fish that we support
our range.. If you are a beginner, you don't even need
to worry too much about your costume when just stating out. You
don't even need guns! Just show up and we'll be happy to show
you the ropes and get you started.
Our objective is to provide a safe and fun forum to ring steel for shooters of all levels of experience, and we especially
like to help new shooters.
We take a couple short (10 -15 minute) break during the match to cool down and get a cold drink while the M1 Garand Match
shooters make a line change.
