Albert TERHUNE (b. May 7, 1764 ch. May 27, 1764 Schraalenburgh, Bergen, NJ, d. Mar 15, 1839 Canada). Marr. abt 1789 Norfolk, Ont (LDS) Mary VAN RIPER (RYPER) (b. 5 Dec1768 in NJ d.15 Dec 1839). Given the dates, it is likely that this Albert was also a Loyalist. Children of Albert and Mary VAN RIPER Terhune. Some of these children could have been born in NJ. "The Trail of the Huguenots" by Elmore Reaman states that "Terhunes migrated from Hackensack, NJ to Vittoria, Norfolk, Cy in 1833. Albert and Mary Van Ryper Terhune along with their son, Gillian, his wife Mary Roome Terhune and their grandson, Garrett Terhune. --1816 or earlier, Albert came to Ontario from Pompton Plains, NJ. The Land Registry shows that in 1816 lots 6,7,8,and 9, concession 6, Walpole Twp., Haldiman Co., were registered to Albert Terhune. This land was apparently bought from Joseph Ryerson who also came from Pompton Plains and was connected to the Terhunes by marriage. ---"They moved from an old time Dutch farm in a settled community to a cabin in the bush. Their new home was no doubt something less than elegant, but their new farm covered an area of 800 acres.(Source:James Terhune, New Brunswick, Canada) i. Gilliam Terhune (b. 4 Nov 1790 in Pompton Plains, NJ d. 13 Jun 1840 in Pompton Plains, NJ) mar.9 Jan 1813 to Mary ( Maria, Mariah) ROOME (b 25 Mar 1792 in Norfolk, Ont or Pompton Plains? d. 3 Jul 1870 in Cleveland, OH) dau of Samuel ROOME and Anna COURTER. 1871 census has Mary Terhune ae 78 born NJ. Gilliam , Mary, and their 7 children came to Norfolk Co., Ont. in 1836. They spent the first winter as guests of the Ryerson family. (18.) --Gilliams father , Albert, died in 1839 and Gilliam died shortly thereafter on a visit to Pompton Plains in 1840. --The family came to Norfolk Ct. in 1836 and spent the first winter as guests of the Ryerson Family. Land records show that Gulliam purchased Lot 31,Conc.2, part of lot 21, Conc. 3 and part of lot 23, all in Charlotte Twp. In 1839, he inherited 800 acres in Walpole Twp. from his father ii Fytie TERHUNE (b. 11 Jul 1788 in Pompton Plains NJ) marr. Martin S. BERRY. -Jane Berry(b. 22 Nov 1816 in NJ) marr first cousin Albert TERHUNE (b. 30 Mar 1816, d. abt 1890)-Albert Terhune (b. 13 Feb 1836). |
