The Karate Institute has been in DeKalb since 1973 under master instructor Sensei Andrew
Torok. Prior to that time, Sensei Torok operated a number of schools in and around Cleveland,
Ohio. He also studied a variety of martial arts systems in Ohio and in Vermont. Sensei Torok
began his training in judo and Tae Kwon Do under En Soo Hong, over 30 years ago. He also
studied Shaolin kung fu under Art Sikes, and savate (French kick boxing) under Frank Kovacs.
Sensei Torok also studied Tai Chi, Shotokan karate, and Thai kick boxing. In 1969 he met Al Gene
Caraulia, one of Emperado's first black belts. Sensei Torok recognized the value of Kajukenbo
for bringing his martial arts background together under one system. While studying with Al
Gene Cauralia, Sensei Torok also competed nationally on the Cleveland Black Belt Team. After
leaving Ohio, Sensei Torok enhanced his Kali, Jan Fa, Wing Chun, and Penjak Silat by extensive
training under Mike Knauf, a certified instructor under Danny Inosanto, and with numerous
seminars with Inosanto himself. Master Torok's 5th degree black belt is certified by the
Kwanmuzendokai, WUKO(World Union Karate Organization), and the USKA(United States
Karate Association). He is also a life member of the National Judo Institute.
