Railroad Date Nail Photos
It has been many years since I collected date nails from many railroads.
Recently I got the collections out of storage and made a display of some
of my favorites, Here are some pictures:
| Railroad | Notes |
| Southern Pacific | This set combines nails from the west as well as the ones from Texas. They are often kept separate in collections. |
| Santa Fe | The Santa Fe had the largest set of nails of any railroad. I didn't have nearly all of them. The 30 in the upper left hand corner was not from the Santa Fe. It was pulled from Rio Grande track and is one of two known to exist. |
| C&NW | The North Western had an interesting set due to variety in size of the nails. |
| Big 4 | The Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and Saint Louis had an itneresting set of nails which were mostly square. The oldest nails I ever pulled myself was the diamond indent 6 in this photo. It was found in Benton Harbor, Michigan in the track. The second oldest nail I ever found was the 13 in this same photo. It was found not too far from the 6. Some of these nails are really NYC and Michigan Central.. |
| Cotton Belt | The Saint Louis South Western nails in this set were easily found when I last looked in the early 80's. |
| Illinois Central | The only ones I ever found myself were in the 50's. The rest I traded for. The indent 48 was from a test section. |
| Grand Trunk Western | Most of these nails, I pulled myself in Michigan. These are shorter than most nails. |
| Milwaukee Road | This railroad used mostly small copper nails and there are lots of minor varieties in the shapes of the numbers. Some might be from second hand ties of the Chicago, North Shore and Milwaukee which also used the little copper nails. |
| Rio Grande | The Denver and Rio Grande Western is not known to be a significant user of date nails. Only the 29 and 30 have been reported. Both were 1.5 inches long and I have only the 30. The 30 in this photo is one of two known to exist. The other, I traded to another collector years ago. Are you out there? |
| Western Union | You can find these nails along many railroad rights of way in the poles if they were owned by this telegraph company. These nails come from many different states and many different railroad lines. |
| Cincinnati Northern | The Cincinnati Northern was part of the Big 4 which was part of the New York Central. So the nails shown in this picture are actually Big 4 and/or NYC nails. I pulled most of these myself. In the picture, I mislabelled the CN nails as NYC. I'll fix the photo eventually. |
| D&TSL | The Detroit and Toledo Shoreline ran between these two cities. The nails are similar to GTW in size and shape except these nails have indented instaed of raised numbers. |
