About the Church of Christ
Where We’ve Come from:
Ninety years ago were not only boom times for the Red River Valley
farmers but it was a period of great spiritual revival. Evangelists and church planters were doing
Kingdom work seeking the lost. Many
churches in Crookston already existed when “The Christian Church
(Disciples)” formed on June
1, 1915. These Christian
disciples, who founded the church, made a covenant stating:
We, the undersigned,
having been immersed upon the confession of our faith in Christ do unite to
form a Church of Christ in Crookston, and having already covenanted with God in
Christ, do hereby covenant with each other that we will keep all the ordinances
and commandments of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; agreeing to be governed
in our personal conduct and in our church relations and obligations by the Law
Of Christ as taught in the New Testament and pledging each other to do all in
our power to promote the peace, unity, and prosperity of this church and to
extend the kingdom of Christ in all the world, in testimony whereof we affix
our respective names.
Twenty-six signatures of the charter
members were written into the Record book, some of them were: Mr. & Mrs.
T.M. McCall, horticulturalist for the Northwest School of Agriculture, Mr.
& Mrs. A.M. DeLapp, professor at the Crookston Business College
and Drs. Frank and Blanch Sharp, both resident physicians.
What
We’re About
The
Church of Christ is a non-denominational
church. Technically speaking, our church
is under no regional bishop or national hierarchy that hands down policy for
all its constituents. But the Church of Christ is also practically
non-denominational in that we’re a Bible church. We form no formal creeds of what we believe;
we stand on the Scriptures as the Word and Revelation of the one true God. We believe that followers of Jesus should
demonstrate in essentials, unity, in opinions, liberty; in all things, charity. We realize that other churches bearing the
name of Christ may see minor areas of doctrine differently than we do. But we recognize that the more significant
and over-arching binding tie between all believers is Jesus Christ
Himself. We are not the only Christians;
we are Christians only.
Who
We Are
We
are a church made up of people from various theological and denominational
backgrounds that have been made one in Christ Jesus.
Our
Values
The
New Testament book of Acts describes the church as being divinely designed to
be – radically committed to Jesus Christ and the Word of God, irrevocably
committed to prayer and to fellowship with one another. The Holy Spirit operated freely among and
through the first-century believers, and empowered them to minister beyond
their own human abilities. Our objective
is to become a church that operates as the first-century church did.
What You Can Expect
We
will talk about and demonstrate a personal relationship with God through His
Son Jesus Christ. The dress of our
church is casual, although no one has ever been thrown out for wearing a suit
and tie! Our worship is a blend of
traditional hymns and contemporary praise and worship music. We occasionally use drama skits to help
communicate God’s truth. We promote
Christian discipleship through Bible studies and small groups. We are learning to serve God and His church
with our spiritual giftedness. We will
invite you to join us on the path to knowing God and shining His light in this
world of darkness and deception.
