John
Bartley and Dan Barnett, R.D.’s
Following
a cold snowy winter, a warm March dried out the foothills above Salt
Lake City, leaving smooth and fast trail conditions. We thus were
sure that course records would fall this year. However, like last
year, the unpredictable Utah spring weather stepped in at the last
moment.
When 76
runners congregated at Morris Meadow for the 8 a.m. start, the
temperature was cool and pleasant, the sky was partly cloudy, and a
howling east wind was making it difficult to stand up straight, much
less run. Gusts probably exceeded 50 mph on exposed ridge tops.
The first, northwestern loop of the course includes a difficult climb
from 5.5 to 7 miles, and the difficulty surely was at least doubled by
the climb being run straight upwind. As usual, Karl Meltzer
promptly grabbed the lead at the start. Ken Jensen, the only
runner ever to beat Karl in the BSTM, bypassed the run this year to
taper for a road marathon and thus Karl ran pretty much unchallenged by
anything but the wind. He took 1:35 to complete the 10.6 mile
first loop (3100’ of elevation gain and loss), and that was sufficient
to open up an 8-minute lead over a chase pack that included Matt Clay,
Leland Barker, Ty Draney, and Dylan Andrews. Karl by then had
concluded that any chance of improving on his course record (3:53) was,
uh, gone with the wind. Still, while the chase pack disintegrated
over the next several miles, he stretched his lead to a comfortable 25
minutes and cruised to the finish in 4:01, notching his third
consecutive BSTM victory. Matt Clay finished second in a strong 4:26,
followed by Leland Barker in 4:35.
Newcomer
Rachel Garton finished the first loop five minutes behind the chase
pack and with a commanding lead over other women on the course.
Her well-paced start permitted her to pick off the stragglers from the
chase pack around the southeastern loop. Her time of 4:40 was
only two minutes off the women’s course record held by Petra Pirc and
good enough for fourth overall. Pat McMurtry also ran a strong
second loop, moving up from 12th at the end of the first
loop to sixth at the finish.
The wind
abated around midday and back-of-the-packers discovered that, in calm
air, it actually was a rather warm day. Gatorade consumption went
up dramatically. Cynthia Daniels and Jeri Pugh edged out Irv
Nielsen in a heated battle for the coveted position of DFL (i.e., dead
last). Bob Henderson and Fred Riemer also lollygagged as hard as
they could, vying for DFL, but were unable to make up the huge
advantage that Cynthia, Jeri, and Irv, as well as Jodi Martin and Karen
Helfrich, established by starting an hour and a half early at 6:30.
Thanks are
extended to Dan Haesloop, Tony DeArcos, Dale Heisler, Paul Butkovich,
Kristi Bartley, and Sheila Barnett for helping staff aid stations,
deflagging the course, and being of good cheer generally.

Irv adds: "Dan and John put on the best spring Marathon in Utah.
Thanks ever so much for their efforts. The big climbs are tough and the
downhills are just as bad as anything I could have imagined. I think a
gust of 70 mph hit me on the way down the first big climb. I had
to lean forward on the steep downhills to keep my momentum going. My
quads took 3 days to recover but I am feeling extra spunky
now. I may have something in common with Karl Meltzer: He
listened to music on his earphones and so did I. But that is about all
you could compare. It sort of bugs me to know he could have run
two of these marathons before I finished one, but what can you
do? Still, I did love seeing you all out on the
trails. Run it fast, run it slow. What a terrific
event! Kind of makes me feel sorry for the road runners who are
gearing up for the Salt Lake City Marathon. They won't get
scenery like we had."
Thanks again Dan & John.
