Brighton - 7 or so Miles

Greetings all you smelly trail dancers.  The Brighton Marathon this year was forced to make a course alteration because of the huge amounts of snow found between Clayton Peak on the east and Twin Lakes on the west.  This was the lovely shady trail  normally found to be very runnable but had 10 foot deep snow in the same area that last year had nary a skiff of snow.  It was judged by Grizz and I to be too risky for mild mannered trail dancers seeking solitude amongst the flowers, fir, and spruce.  Grizz told me most of Clayton Peak was okay but Sunset Pass to Dog Lake was inundated with heavy snow.   I had checked Lake Mary to Twin Lakes Pass and it was nasty buisness trying to cross snow being undercut by rnning water.  When I went up to my hip a couple of times, I was convinced  that altering the course a bit was in order.  Stan Crane, always a big helper, went up Days Fork and took a few trees for our benefit on Wednesday.  Friday was the day I took my final look.  Not too bad, I finally decided if the runners were to go up Days Fork and so on Saturday at 7 am, the runners looking for a Rocky Moutain high trotted off going counter clockwise on the usual course.  They had a swell time missing most of the mountain bikers but did run into a huge trail working crew between Blunder Fork and Mill D.
Doug Wahlquist and I drove down to Mill D with aid station supplies.  Thanks Wally, for returning Phil Lowry to his GPS roving vehicle.  After setting up, the Gorilla and Wally  just soaked in the local scenery while watching the local fisherman and talking with friendly passers by.  After sampling all the aid station food, the first ones arrived and crossed Big Cottonwood road.
Brian Hamos and Jeff Gerke came in to Mill D in just under 2 hours.  Sarah Evans and Mandy Hosford were right behind 7 minutes back.  The runners trickled in over the next 40 minutes or so.  Doug took off for an appointment (thanks for all the grub you provided Wally) and I drove back up to the top of the Brighton loop for the finish line and took Sandy Johnson with me who was bailing out with a somewhat sore knee that hadn't quite healed up yet.  Runners reported seeing Cynthia Daniels out on the trail.  She turned around at Mill D and returned the same way having started at the Brighton General Store.  Reyn Gallacher and Kirk Dyches showed up an hour late and couldn't figure out where we had gone so they ran to Pole Line Pass and back which doubled their snow time.  Also, Derek Blaylock was up doing his own thing.  John Mason and Dave Hanscomb both made separate appearances.  Dave was helping with the Audobon bird count in the morning.  Fun to see everyone.
While I waited for the runners to go up Days Fork, across the top of Silver Fork, over Davenport Hill, down into Grizzly Gulch, up to Twin Lakes Pass, down to the dam, down the rough and rocky trail to Silver Lake, and back up to the finish across from the Lake Mary trail, I set up chairs and some shade.  I had hiked this last section yesterday in 5 hours and the snow at the top of Days fork was pretty tough but Brian Hamos must have found it a slice of cake as he took just a little over 2 hours finishing first on this shortened course.   Jeff Gerke was less than 4 minutes behind.  Sarah and Mandy stuck together coming in tied for third about 45 minutes later.  Three minutes later Bob Henderson came in 5th.  Eve Davies and Charlie Vincent came in tied for 6th about  6 minutes under 5 hours and 2 minutes later Lorie Hutchison and Wynn Shooter came in. DeAnna McLaughlin was jus over 5 hours.  Roger Adams, Grizz Randall, Doug Heinrich, John Diroll and Barb Elias all made it in well under 6 hours.  Many of these runners got in some "mild bonus miles" when they couldn't find the well marked trail through  the Spruces camp grounds just past campsite # 18 or stayed on the Days Fork trail too long and nearly got to the ridge looking down on Alta.  Fred Gabriel got detoured long enough to delay his arrival at the finish line by at least a half hour.  Let his extra detour receive the "moderate bonus miles" award.   The next and last three runners receive the "mega bonus miles" award.  They came in at 7:11:22 after a bonus trip to Doughnut Falls, got lost in Spruces campground, took another bonus trip to the top of Days Fork after going right past the trail through the snow to Silver Fork Pass, and yet another bonus trip to Wolverine Basin (a right turn instead of left turn at Twin Lakes Pass).  Brett and Carl Brailsford and Brent Rutledge had quite a day getting around this backwards loop but they sure got their moneys worth.  Carl was very concerned I was waiting too long for his group.   Here I was worried he would be permantly lost and he is worried about me.  Wow.   What a great guy.  A very successful day and wonderful end to the yearly trail dancing party.   I'm glad you had a fun trip.  The flowers were very nice (lower altitudes) and there was even an extra "bonus" lake at the top of Silver Fork.  Small but cute.   Ya all come next year.   Gorilla Irv
ps - it doesn't start where the Mystery D Marathon starts.  Also, some GPS measurements gave 21.5 miles and some said closer to 22 miles.   Lets call it 22 just to pat our selves on the back longer.  Speaking of another pack on the back, Bob Henderson and John Diroll were planning on additional mileage with a trip up to Catherine Pass and back after a burger and a beer at the Brighton Store.  Animals!@
