*****************************************************************************************
A big applause to Stan Crane for trail marking, cutting a few trees off the trail (although there were so many this year, it may not seem like much), and for cooking up sourdough pancakes at the finish line.  Thanks to Cindy Andrus and Claude Grant who hiked a bunch of water up to Blunder Fork and manned the first aid staion.  Stan Larrabee and crew hiked water up to the Utley Tree at mile 17.  John Moellmer carried more water and met all the runners at mile 17, the Utley Tree,  on race day distributing some food and took times.  Then he hoofed his way to the finish by going down Porter Fork.
The weather was pretty miserable Monday before the race with 6 to 12 inches of snow up there and frigid temperatures.  But by Saturday, the temperatures were up in the 50's up at 10,000 feet and very sunny. The runners did have to go through some snow on the trail with several inches on the shady north side of the mountain. It was warm enough that runners were reported striping layers of clothes in the first 2 miles going up the pavement towards Scotts Pass.  Mandy and Sarah were reported by Charlie Vincent pushing the pace  and leading a few anxious men up the Guardsman Pass road. (Charlie was sitting the day out due to an infected foot).  It turned out to be quite a horse race as Eric had only a small lead at 17 miles.  Mandy was determined to nab first this time and pushed Eric down the last section with a couple of big dogs behind complaining that she was making it hard for them to catch up.  Arnie and Brian barely passed her before Mandy shot into the finish less than 3 minutes back at the Edmond Ellsworth picnic site nailing down fourth overall delighted at being numero uno for the women.  By the way Mandy, that was the second fastest time ever run by a woman in the history of the run.  (Barbie Patterson ran a 4:16 back in 1987).  Sarah Evans ran the 3rd fastest time in history coming in shortly after.  Return of  Power Women!  Speaking of history, a blast from the past reappeared at this run after taking 18 years off.  Jared Higgins returned triumphantly with a terrific time.
There were few reports of runners getting lost.  Doug W. mentioned being lost for a couple of turns in the snow but soon got back on the trail.  Thanks to all those who marked the course  - pretty sad when a few runners can't even get lost.  What a blow to our reputation.
Dave Hanscomb ran an excellent time for his first Deso. Grizz Randall was not planning on running but a trip up Lone Peak with Wasatch Mountain Club got him exited about it and he brought another club member to share the days scenery, Frederick Gabriel.  The colorful leaves and pleasant trails were a great joy and comfort to all participants.  I sat in the finish area all day enjoying the atmosphere and the excited runners as they finished.  It was great to see Joan and Catherine come down the trail having spent as much time as they could strolling through the woods.  Those gals know how to maximize their enjoyment.
Well done!  Now get back to work.   Thanks again to all who helped pull the 21st edition of the Desolation Marathon together.
