Miscellaneous
Stan Crane got in a morning 10 miler putting up more ribbons and sticks.
Joan Moellmer got in about a 6 miler doing an out and back to the Salt Lake City Overlook
The Blunder Fork team gets credited with a 4 miler.
I got a report Karl Meltzer came up to Blunder Fork and then went with Cheryl to Dog Lake and helped carry peoples extra clothes to the finish.  Karl won the Bear 100 last week, so, this must have been beyond the call of duty. What a good sport.

Stan Crane was the trail marking guy (D.T. stakes & ribbons), chopped several trees off the trail or chopped in a foot hold to get across them, carried 3 gallons of water to the Utley Tree, and cooked his famous sourdough pancakes at the finish line.  Pancake Stan is the "Man".  Jill Bohney took 2 1/2 gallons up to the Utley Tree from Porter Fork and ended up in knee deep snow.  What a trooper!  The aid station at Blunder Fork was manned by Claude Grant, Cindy Andrus, Brian Howard, Adam Grobben , Jay who is one of Adam's room mates, and Adam's sister Stephanie and her boyfriend Taylor.  The leaves were beautiful and the weather was perfect.  They barely went through two gallons of water....actually poured out the last part of the second gallon.   They had carried up around 7 gallons of water and some trail goodies.  Thank you very much Blunder Fork Team, you rock!.
Congratulations to Brian Hamos who got a first this year in a team effort as Dan Hall and Brian both ran in together. Brian had  two consectutive years of second place.  Got the monkey off his back this year.  They were chased closely by Keith Bronstein and David McKnight.  Women's winner Cheryl Pfeil was close behind, too, and I heard this was the farthest she has ever run.   Congratulations Cheryl!   Eve Davies and Dee McLaughlin came dancing in 42 minutes later with big grins for all the lovely fall colors and the pleasant trails despite the snow.  Charlie Vincent had came by after Cheryl knowing that no one was going to catch her.  Several of the Wasatch veterans were here and even some of next weeks St George Marathon bound runners were making it two weekends in a row.  Grizz is on the prowl for another St. George.  Over 20, I think.  A very tough Davy Crockett took only a week off from the Bear 100 and made it under 6  hours.  He was in the lead at one point but around 12 miles, wisdom came out in full blossom and he backed off to let those mountain legs take him trail dancing without stressing them any further.  You can read his story and see pictures at:  Crockett Sings and Dances the Desolation Marathon     While Dave was singing (no doubt the "Trail Root Blues"), Roger Adams decided to punch it at the end.  He said to me as he flew past, "I'm smelling the barn, Irv!"  Better to smell the barn then the other runners, I always say.  Steve Kissel came back to finish his very first Desolation after cutting down Porter Fork last time he ran it in the snow.  Welcome back Steve.   The male Moellmer running team (a combined 87 years old) did a nice job of prancing all over the leaves on their annual pilgrimage.  Joan Moellmer went up to meet them and making sure they didn't have all the fun.  Andrew Witter and Jodi Martin rounded off a very nice group of runners.  Jodi came with Karen Helfrich who had started at Upper Big Water to do the big fall leaf dance.  Doug Wahlquist and his son-in-law John Burkholz had slipped past me just past the Porter Fork junction as I was grooming some of those steep downhills.
I didn't see Kathy and Duane Schmutz until they saundered into Box Elder. Well,  nice job all of you.
There was more snow than I thought up there.   It slowed everyone down.   The leaves were even more gorgeous than I had hoped for.  At times it looked like the hillsides were drenched in fall colors.   There were very many varied leaf colors and even the oak leafs on the Gambels Oaks were outrageously colorful running from Rusty red, brown, orange, yellow, and green.   The view looking over at Church Fork as you dropped to Box Elder Picnic Grounds was spectacular.   Getting  Bloody Knee recognition was Grizz Randall who had a few close encounters as he became "One with the Trail".   Special recognition goes to Joan Moellmer for bringing homemade Peach ice cream, wow what a treat,  and Jill Bohney came with a bunt banana flavored cake with maple? icing.  Along with warm sourdough pancakes, WOOO OOOO!   Doesn't get much better than this! Seems like several of you bailed out at the last minute and / or showed up on a different weekend.  Deso is always the last Saturday in September (or always one week prior to St George) if you find that easier to remember.  Sorry you missed this truly magnificent run.  I was a very happy camper, getting to participate this time.  Smiles all around.
