KINGS PEAK
5 August 2000

Grizz Randall and Stephen Utley ran the Kings Peak 40 miler in
11 hours and 45 minutes.  The ascent to Kings was minus any
snow.  The weather was delightful.
KUDOS to the Camel and Grizz!!
From the Grizz:
"Steven and I had a marvelous time on King's Peak although I held the
pace back a bit from what Steven probably would have preferred.  We saw
many (15?) mooses.
The highlight of the trip for me was seeing my first ever Ptarmigans.
They were on the slope just before the cliff band you descend to Gunsight Pass.  They
are pigeon-sized grouse, (the Alaska State Bird) who rely for protection
on their camo coloration, changing from white in the winter to speckled brown in
summer.  They will not fly.  They just run and then stop and if you take
your eye off of one when he stops you will have difficulty spotting him
again.  Cute little devils."   Grizz
