MILLCREEK CANYON 50 K
East of Salt Lake City, UT - Millcreek Canyon
28 JULY 2007
This year’s run brought us 33 night owls at the start, with 26 finishers. Both were records. Other records were turned in by Shane Martin with a course record of 6 hours and 58 minutes, shaving 5 minutes off of Matt Clay’s 7 hour and 3 minute run in the climbing direction - or up the canyon.  Jodi Martin became our only five-time finisher, running her best time for this direction. A group of runners following Shane were Peter Lindgren, Christian Johnson, Jeff LaMora, and Carter Williams; with Jeff LaMora pulling away for the second place finish, in 7 hours and 26 minutes. On the women’s side, Liz Irvine narrowly missed Ruth Zolinger and Suki Stewart’s course record by 4 minutes; running 8 hours and 50 minutes. Becky Clements only missed the record by 14 minutes, finishing 10 minutes behind Liz. As a testament to how hard the course is, times will reflect closer to a 50 mile race. Other things worth mentioning was the moon - full, Kevin Lawlor’s aid station at the top of Grandeur Peak drew praise at Elbow Fork with comments; something about strawberries and chocolate, champagne and wine. He also hauled up enough water to fill everyone’s water bottles. (Have a good trip to Mount Blanc in August, Kevin!) The food donations were incredible. Highlights were: guacamole and chips, a huge bowl of cut-up melon, boiled potatoes, coffee flavored brownies, and huge amounts of snack bars, cliff bars, Gatorade and bananas. Next year I will come up with a better plan to get more of the aid to the Dog Lake aid station. Aid stations were set up, course was marked, glow sticks were set, and water was hauled in, then stripped and taken down.  Thanks to the following people for your help; Wes Parks, Mark Jensen, Rich Baxter, Jared Campbell, Erik Storheim, Rich McDonald, Roch Horton and John Lindblom. Dustan Haycock and George Sunderland, in a seven day period ran the Speedgoat 50K, Deseret News marathon, and the Millcreek Canyon 50K. I am not certain they were the only ones.  George Sunderland’s Deseret News marathon was his 100th one. And Davy Crockett ran the Vermont 100 in a 25 hour time, last weekend. My only regret was that I didn’t get to see more of you at the finish, having only seen the first two runners come in and then the last runner come in, but there were still things on the course left to do. See you next year going down the canyon.  Please email me with any changes.
