Angry Minute 7-20-01
Out of 100 or so Angry Minutes produced here on Dark in the Morning,
only a handful have really had the luxury of being so lopsided in its argument,
that the debate should never come to fruition to begin with.
Case in point is the push for the federal funding of Stem Cell Research.
The number of dollars spent, energy wasted, and ego's inflated
would make Liberace look like an underachiever.
The fact is, the facts are never really discussed.
The fact that embryos which are routinely discarded, that is, THROWN AWAY,
would ONLY be used, gets shelved.
The fact that adult stem cell research,
with federally funded research could replace ALL embryonic stem cell research, is ignored.
But the glaring fact (if any, right?) that remains,
is that this is not about research, or even ethical research,
and this is not about the law, even outdated laws.
This is, and always WILL be about the forward march of religion.
The debate over when Life begins doesn't even HAVE to enter into the debate
when discussing Pluripotent Stem Cells,
the inner cell mass that if has brought us insight into blood cell advancements.
Pluripotent Stem Cells remain far from the definition of Life,
because even if placed in the womb, would not be able to sustain life.
That Stem Cell Research is about abortion is a smoke screen
even Ronald Reagan would envy.
On the other hand, even Nancy Reagan has given public support for Stem Cell Research.
Wesley J. Smith cites:
The point of legalized abortion - whether or not one accepts the premise - is that the law
should not force a woman to use her body for gestation and giving birth against her will.
But in Stem Cell Research, there is no woman being forced to do anything.
Thus abortion is utterly irrelevant.
Still confused? Try this old saying lawyers often nudge each other on:
"If you can't argue the facts, argue the law, if you can't argue the facts or the law, blow smoke."
