In many areas of the world, nannies are very commonly Live In. That is very different here in the Seattle (and surrounding) areas. With my experience, as surprising as the rent prices are around here, nannies are very well settled in their own places and loving it.
Live In Nanny: From a families perspective, many times a live in nanny can provide an extra set of eyes around the house and generally less money out of the pocket. This does pose a privacy issue with families who can not provide separate living quarters for the nanny because it is another adult living in your home. From the nanny's perspective, a nanny feels that her privacy is a big issue. Most nannies will only live in if the conditions are right. The family home must be very neat and clean and the living area must be separate from the rest of the home and not just a room at the end of the hall. The best idea of all comes from one of my clients who purchased a condo 5 minutes from the family home and uses that as one of the nanny's benefits. That idea has become more and more popular with families because it not only cuts costs but increases the reliability of the nanny because she is not having to wade through traffic (and experience traffic burn out) on many of the local freeways to get to and from work.
Live Out Nanny: This is generally the type of nanny you will find in the Seattle (and surrounding) areas. A live out nanny comes into your home for the specified work hours and then goes home.
