What's Lurking in Your Carpet?

"Dust Mite"

Carpet is a very efficient pollution collector. This is good, for it is better to have the pollutants I am about to review trapped in your carpet between cleaning, instead of floating in the air we breath. The variety of contaminants found in carpet is vast: accumulated motor oil, asphalt residue, lawn fertilizer, insecticides. we must add great quantities of natural waste, oils from cooling vapors, food crumbs, beverage spills, hair, dead skin cells, dead insects, and insect excretions. All providing food sources for harmful microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, dust mites, mold). Not educated of the dangers, people live day after day, year after year in midst of these contaminants. Contaminants tracked in from streets and parking lots (industrial waste) constitute the greatest health threat: "Cancer."

Research reveals that animal dander, pet excretions, viruses, bacteria (natural waste), fungi, pollen, and dust mites - all found in carpet - have been linked to rhinitis, sinusitis, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, alveolitis, dermatitis, eczema, and mycotoxicosis, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic (long-lasting) disease in the United States. About 35 million Americans, including 6 million children, suffer from seasonal allergies. Allergies result in 8.4 million doctor visits, 3.5 million lost work days, and 2 million lost school days each year. Seasonal allergies can be associated with ear infections, sinus problems, headaches, fatigue, irritability, sleeping problems, sore throat, and lack of concentration. Without proper management, allergies can also affect existing conditions such as asthma.

Quite simply, if your carpet acts like a filter, then it filters and collects sources of soil, bacteria, allergens, and pollutants from the indoor environment. These contaminants are part of what makes your carpet "ugly-out." This "collection" and "filtering" process allows carpet to trap contaminants within the carpet. Hard surface floors may allow these contaminants to continue to "roam" throughout the indoor environment. But like any filter, your carpet needs to be periodically cleaned out. You owe it to yourself and your family to find a cleaning company that "Cleans for Health." If these contaminants are in your house they could be contribution to you and your family's health and allergy problems.

What Do You Do About All Those "Lurking-Things?"

For one thing, periodic vacuuming. Vacuuming can remove a great deal of this soiling. But most vacuum bags allow small particles to pass through them. These released particles tend to build up over time and have the greatest potential to cause harm as they are inhaled deep into the lungs. Many other types of contamination simply cannot be removed by regular vacuuming. That is why it is absolutely essential that you have your carpets periodically cleaned professionally. Professional Carpet Cleaning by the Hot Water Extraction method makes a significant positive contribution to removing these contaminants.

Here is what Dr. Berry of the EPA has stated:

"Every time carpets and fabrics are emptied of their pollution buildup through professional cleaning methods, there is a health benefit. Cleaning processes that extract pollutants from the environment enhance the quality of the indoor environment by reducing exposure. Cleaning, especially through extraction, improves environmental conditions and health protection."

How Often Should You Have Your Carpets Cleaned?

How often you have have your carpets professionally cleaned depends on a number of circumstances. Du Pont, the world's largest manufacturer of fibers, recommends cleaning at least once every 18 months. But other considerations may increase the frequency rate: smoking habits, number and ages of children, soiling conditions, humidity, temperature, condition of the outdoor environment, health status of occupants, allergy conditions, number and types of pets, and the types of activities being conducted are just a few.

When you see soiling, such as traffic areas in your carpet, you have waited too long.
