My profession of choice at the moment is as a freelance Lighting Technician for all the local theaters in town. I say "of choice" because unfortunately for most of us, theater rarely pays all the bills. No one goes into it for the money, and only a few make the big dough. So it turns out that I find myself with a week of time here and there with nothing to do. So I am always looking for ways to make money.
Im looking into getting some equipment so I can do band lighting gigs on the weekends. I am also consulting for various people and schools (for no pay, but the idea is that they will need someone to operate all this new fangled equipment I am showing them they need to have).

Highlights:
I just recently did my first lighting design job. It was for "Clarence Darrow: Crimes, Causes and the Courtroom." The show is a one man show and rather simple set, so we only required 6 areas of lighting and 3 specials. Each area received three lights. This was a very simple lighting setup, but having no formal light design training, I was a bit nervous at first. The actor told me what he needed for cues and when, and I set all levels and programed the ETC lighting board. Sheryl Miller helped out a lot with the artistic aspect of the lighting.
My favorite show so far was "The Highest Heaven"
by Childsplay. On that show I was Master E and board op. The brought in
their own designer who brought with him 4 Technobeams and an LCD controller.
He taught me enough to program the board with movements, split colors,
lithos and cross fades.. all the basics. I still don't know how he created
that burning woods effect though.
