THE BIGELOW FAMILY
RALPH BAGULEY, d. 1540.
Ralph Baguley was the owner of Ollerton Hall in the parish of
Knutsford, Cheshire. He is undoubtedly a descendant of Hamon de
Baguley who acquired Ollerton Hall by marriage in the fourteenth
century. Unfortunately, parish records do not exist that far back, so
the line of descent from Hamon to Ralph is unknown. However, Hamon was
the grandson of Richard de Baguley, Lord of Baguley, who owned lands in
the county of Cheshire. Richard married Alice, daughter of Ralph de
Verdun. Their heir, Hamon's father, was named Ralph. He married a
daughter of Hamon de Massey, Baron of Dunham Massey, and owner of lands
in Baguley and Ollerton. Ralph had two other sons, John and William,
but the Baguley name died out in their lines within a few generations.[1/4]

RANDALL BAGULEY, d. 1626, m. JANE ___.
Randall moved to Wrentham, Suffolk from Cheshire. The proof
connecting the Baguley family of Wrentham with the Bigelow family of
Watertown is two-fold. The rector of the Wrentham parish in 1617 was
the Rev. John Phillips, who later emigrated to Dedham, Massachusetts.
During his years in Dedham, Phillips once stated that the blacksmith
John Biglo of Watertown was the same infant he had baptised in 1617 as
the son of Randall Beageley, and that he (Phillips) had "known John
Biglo from earliest youth upward". Further, in a civil case in
Watertown during his lifetime, John Bigelow took the witness stand and
identified himself as "John Biglo, formerly of Wrentham, England".[1/8]

RICHARD FLAGG, b. abt. 1500, d. abt. 1550, m. MARGARET ____, bur. Shipdham Oct. 10, 1558. Richard Flagg lived in Shipdham, Norfolk. He died about 1550 and had a wife Margaret.[1] Richard was left some goods by the will of his father in 1536 and also received some lands in Shipdham. From the church wardens' accounts of Shipdham we have that in 1536 Richard paid (or was taxed) 12 pence for the plough lot of Thorpe Row and that he was a church warden from 1543 until at least 1546.[2/422] Richard does not appear on the subsidy rolls of 1523 and most likely was living with his father on the latter's homestead or perhaps with an older brother. He is listed among the fifty taxpayers of Shipdham in the 1545 subsidy and paid 4s. on goods, one third of which was paid by his elder and wealthier brother William Flegg. The subsidy of 1548 has only eighteen names, among them Richard Flegg assessed 4s. on goods. At the next subsidy, dated March 20, 1551-2, Richard does not appear on the roll.[2/422] Richard most likely died in the Roman Catholic faith as the Church of England was not effected until 1558. Church records from 1547-1552 are missing, but Richard was taxed in 1548 but not in 1552. A Richard Flegg (evidently the son of Richard) is found in the records but without the designation of "junior" or "senior". Richard was certainly dead by 1558 as the widow of Richard Flegg was buried in that year. Shipdham is a parish about twenty miles west of Norwich. In 1245 the bishop of Ely obtained a charter for a stock-fair to be held annually in Shipdham on June 29, a custom continued over six centuries.[2/423]

John Flagg lived in Shipdham until 1570, but his later residence is unknown.[2/428] Note that the two references give somewhat differing lists of children and also a different descent to the immigrant Thomas. Included here is the line as stated in.[2] In [1] John Flagg has a
child Bartholomew, who had a wife Alicia, and are listed as the parents of the immigrant, who is suppossed to have been baptised in Whinberg, Norfolk in 1615.

Allen Flagg settled as early as 1611 in Hardingham, a small parish about six miles east of Shipdham. His wife was the daughter of Edmund and Ursula (Pitcher) Devoroys. In 1627 Allen's half-brother Michael left 40s. "to my kinsman Michael Flegg of Hardingham, son to my brother
Allen Flegg".[1/432-3]

ROBERT WARREN, b. prob. Wiston, Suffolk, Eng. abt. 1485, d. 1544-5, bur. Wiston, m. MARGARET ____.
Robert's will was dated Oct. 29, 1544 and proved Feb. 22, 1545.[2] He didn't mention his son John in the will, but his son Thomas, in his will of 1559, mentioned his brother John. In the Subsidy of 1524 appears the name of Robert Waryn. John Waryn was also taxed and appeared to be the second wealthiest man on the Wyston list. He was probably the father of Robert. A Thomas Warren left a will dated 1558. He may have been a brother of Robert.[3]

John's first wife was probably the daughter of John Scarlet. John Warren was a card maker in Nayland. A card was a metal comb or wire brush used for combing flax or wool. John was taxed 16 pence on his land in the subsidy (tax) of 1611. He made his will on March 27, 1613 and died within a few months as it was proved Nov. 4, 1613. In the will are mentioned wife Rose; sons John, Isaac, Nathaniel, Amos, Joshua, and Thomas; and duaghters Mary and Elizabeth. Son John was made the executor.[3]
Note: The Bigelow Genealogy gives John's ancestry as follows:
John Warren of Headbury, Devonshire had Christopher. Christopher had William. William and Annie (Mable) Warren had a son Christopher. Christopher and Alice (Webb) Warren had John, the immigrant ancestor.[3]
