I'm an amateur radio operator.  My FCC call sign is KI7V and I was originally licensed in 1990.  My previous call signs were KB7CVK and N7NDS.

If you are interested in becoming an Amateur radio operator, there are many places to begin learning.  A good place to start is the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) site.  To obtain your first license, you must learn some basic electronics, FCC rules and operating procedures.  There are several books to get started and classes may be available that are near to you as well.  You can find all of this information here.

Why would anyone want to do this?  There are several reasons: interest in electronics, building equipment, meeting people across the globe, the challenge of contacting all states, countries etc. There are many aspects of amateur radio that provide a wide variety of operating modes, technology and fun.  Digital communications, slow scan TV and even communications using satellites are possible when you obtain your license.

I primarily operate CW; (Continuous Wave) more commonly known as morse code.  At first, CW can appear to be a difficult thing to learn and may even seem like an antiquated form of communication.  My interest grew when I upgraded to a General class license.  At the time I upgraded, a 13 WPM proficiency exam was required. As I practiced to increase my speed, my interest  grew and I found that I really enjoyed operating CW.  Note that with the current licensing requirements it is not necessary to learn CW at all to begin having fun in amateur radio.

Have a look around to learn more about Amateur Radio!!  73's from John - KI7V
