About Casbah Kitten

The Casbah Kitten all began with the adoption of Jelly Bean from the local Humane Society shelter in 2007.  With their cute antics and sweet natures, she and our older cat Pickles have inspired a line of fun cat toys and accessories. Each item is sewn with great attention to quality and detail, and we use eco friendly and recycled materials as much as possible. The cats grow their own fresh catnip in the backyard, which is harvested and dried for use in the toys.

The craft studio is called the Casbah because it’s home not only to crafting but also belly dancing. And the Casbah Kitten is very much a family business with everyone lending a hand, or paw.

Rita is the Owner of the business and does the designing and sewing of the products, as well as the paperwork and most of the photography and advertising.  The urge to create things is a part of her and has been as long as she can remember.  When she discovered scraps of wood and nails in the garage at age 6, she had the vision of making beautiful things out of them, and selling them in a shop. Now working with fabric, she is combining this vision with her love of animals and awareness of the earth’s need for better stewardship.

jonathan is the Web Master, Technical/Photography Consultant, and also assists with the production process. jonathan currently works as an internet technical support professional and has taught computer classes, done web design, and his photography has been seen in books, magazines and calendars.

Jelly Bean is, of course, the prima donna and top model of the business.  Her face has become the Casbah Kitten logo and she is head of Quality Assurance and Public Relations.  Each new design is thoroughly tested by her for safety, durability and fun-a-bility. She has also starred in a short documentary, but at this time her film career is uncertain.

Pickles is mostly behind the scenes support. He’s head of the Shipping department and is also in charge of the catnip growing operation. He does like to test the snuggly toys and blankets but prefers patrolling the garden or sleeping by the computer. The rumor that he plans to retire this year is unsubstantiated.

Jane joined the team late in 2008. An adopted stray, her pretty markings and winning ways make her a natural in front of the camera.  She will be taking over the role of official Blog Cat.  She will also work closely with Jelly Bean in the toy testing department.  Young and ambitious, Jane aspires to learn every aspect of  the Casbah Kitten business and hopes one day to be head of Public Relations.
