Setting Up A Modem in BeOS

UPDATE: 27/July/2001 - Please see this excellent configuration guide http://www.benews.com/net/.  It covers all types of Internet connections and is a MUST for anyone having problems connecting BeOS to the Net. J

Here is my own brief page demonstrating a working internal PCI hardware modem configuration with screen captures from BeOS.  I also have a short page on setting up and configuring a Cisco675 DSL router / modem for use with BeOS Here

If you have happened upon this page and don't know what the BeOS is, you can find out by going to the Be Inc. web site at http://www.be.com/

The Be website also has a page with an excellent PPP troubleshooting guide at
http://www.be.com/support/guides/ppp.html.  With another page covering the most common user support questions at http://www.be.com/support/breakingnews/

There is also a BeOS Tip Server that has over 400 useful tweaks and hints at http://www.betips.net/

Now, on to the fun!

Before we begin you will need to know a few things:

What COM or Serial port is my modem currently using?
If you are using anything but COM3 or 4, you will also need to know
What the IRQ and I/O ranges for the COM port being used are.
(look here for a list)

IMPORTANT NOTE:  These instructions are for internal true hardware ISA modems when used with Release 4.5 and above of the BeOS. If you are using Release 4 you can go HERE. If you have a 'winmodem' you will need to stop and attach a different modem, (or refer to http://www.benews.com/net/ where you will find instructions for some Lucent and PCTel based soft-modems). Most software based 'winmodems' use the Rockwell HCF chip, identified in Windows device manager as an "HCF modem enumerator".

If you are using a PCI modem the following steps will probably not work for your particular hardware. You will need to refer to http://www.benews.com/net/ or to my own much more limited page Here.

NOTE:  BeNews has an article on setting up true hardware PCI modems.  Go HERE for more information.
