These instructions are for the Cisco 675 external modem/router
used in many places.
I am only going to cover two types of settings: Fixed IP and
DHCP
If your Cisco is set to Bridging mode (check the bottom
of the unit for a sticker)
these instructions will *not* help you. Sorry : (
You should have at least the following:
1) Cisco 675 (set to PPP)
2) 3Com 3c905 Ethernet Card (or other BeOS
supported network interface card)
3) Phone Cable
4) DB9 to RJ45 Serial Cable
5) CAT-5 patch cable (RJ45 to RJ45)
Once you have your cables connected and the modem pluged in, the modem can be programed.
If your modem is set to 'Bridging'
mode This Won't Work
(NOTE: It's a good idea to save these settings under a memorablename so if you ever have to reconfigure you can.) View all connection settings here.
2) You should have a prompt for a password from the modem, mine didn't have a password pre-installed, so just hit [enter]. For a screen shot of SerialConnect click here.
3) You should see this: cbos>
4) At the prompt type: enable (hit [enter])
5) The prompt should change from cbos ">" to cbos "#"
6) At the cbos# prompt type:
set ppp wan0-0 login (and your username/logon) [enter]
Mine happens to be like this: set ppp wan0-0 login lfowler3
7) At the prompt type:
set ppp wan0-0 password (and your password) [enter] Mine happens
to be like this: set ppp wan0-0 password *********
8) If you use DHCP GOTO step 12 now!
9) For Fixed IP users type: set dhcp server disable [enter]
10) type: set interface eth0 address (followed by the IP address you were assigned, i.e. 192.168.0.10) [enter]
11) type: set interface eth0 netmask (followed by the subnet mask you were assigned, i.e. 255.255.255.0) [enter]
12) If you use DHCP you should be *here*
:)
At the prompt type: write [enter]
This saves your logon information to the NVRAM in the modem.
13) You can reboot the modem by issuing the 'reboot' command or you can just close your connection program to exit.
14) Open the BeOS network preferences panel
15) Enter the your ISP's Domain name, Primary and Secondary DNS numbers, and a Host name for your computer.
16) Your NIC should get an IP from the Cisco router, but if it doesn't, try using 10.0.0.2 as a fixed IP.
17) Restart Networking
18) Open Netpositive and surf! :)
NOTE: These are the steps I used for USWest and will differ
from other providers. Your mileage may vary, etc. etc.
