I had very little
time to prepare for this trip abroad. Normally I love to study up on a new place
before I go. Thanks to the advent of in-room, high speed Internet access, though,
I've been hunting and pecking on the Web at night while in Hong Kong. Here's
what I've found, in no particular order
- Shinnjuku
. . . the lowdown on the neighborhood (which in any other part of theworld
would pass for a 'city') where I'll be staying
- TokyoQ
. . . "life in the megaopolis"
- Tokyoscapes
. .. part of TokyoQ, photo essay on Tokyo street scene
- Klien
Dytham Architects . . . gaijin architects who maintain a great collection
of pages, including a 'fetish' section devoted to the Japanese love of gadgets
and trinkets
- Tokyo
Meltdown . . . a somewhat outdated webguide to Tokyo art, bars, restaurants
and happenings
- CIA
[Club Information Agency] . . . guide to Tokyo clubs and parties
- Bonsai's
JPop Pages . . . definitive resource for Japanese pop music
- Sake
World . . . about, well, what else?
- Kanebo--The
Lifestyle Company . . . corporate website of a Japanese lifestyle conglomerate:
"Bringing the customer both dreams and satisfaction." Aparently
the fast growing Toiletry Division "is stirring up a whirlwind in the
toiletry business. "
- The
Tokyo Food Page . . . "a complete guide to Japanese cuisine and eating
in Tokyo"
- Cool
Japanese Toys . . . extensive site includes a "toy release calendar"
but doesn't look like it's been updated since last Fall
- Understanding
Japan . . . despite annoying MIDI track, this is a sweeping, up to date
collection of articles about Japan. Just be sure to mute your speakers
- Sanrio.com
. . . home of the ubiquitous Hello Kitty
- Cutie
Dolls . . . a collector's page of 1960's Japanese dolls
- InterCommunications
Center. . . multimedia museum in Shinjuku that--damn!--will be closed
when I visit
- Nihon
Sumo . . . the January Grand Sumo Tournament will be wrapping up when
I arrive. No plans to attend, but I do hope to catch it on TV
- Tsukiji
Fish Market . . . pix of the world's largest fish market
- What
is in working women's handbags? . . . thankfully this site answers teh
question with descriptions in a delightful version of English
