MARY GRACE DONOHUE'S GENEALOGY

My  Aunt Mary, one of my father's sisters, did a family genealogy treatise in a course she took at St Cloud State Teachers College.  In this "genealogy" she ties down many facts, some not necessarily accurate, some with great emphasis on the perfection accomplished in life by both of her parents.  Nonetheless, it is a good record of the family.

THE GENEALOGY OF THE MARY ANNE GRAHAM DONOHUE FAMILY
Written by Mary Grace Donohue, May 1941

Bridget Kelley and Patrick Graham, our maternal great-grand-parents, were born and reared in Tipperary, Ireland. They and their ten children Patrick, Arthur, William, Margaret, John, Thomas, Edward, Alice, Micheal and James came to America and settled in New Orleans.  From there they moved to Ohio.  After remaining in Ohio a short while the family moved to Minnesota. James, Edward and Margaret settled on farms near Freeport.  Arthur was killed during the Civil War.   John died of fever.   Patrick, Alice, Micheal, William and Thomas settled on farms near Melrose.

Thomas,  our grandfather, settled on a farm about two miles south of Melrose.  He left here after a few years and took up a Homestead in Lake George Township. Thomas was born in 1827 in Tipperary, Ireland.
He married Mary McLean      .      She was born of Irish parents, in Liverpool, England.
She lived in Liverpool a very short time, going from there to Tipperary, Ireland.  The McLean family left Ireland for America when Mary was young. They settled in New Orleans before coming to Minnesota. Our great-grandmother McLean is buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Melrose, Minnesota. Mary McLean and Thomas were ome of the first members of the Immaculate Conception Church at New Munich, Minnesota. This was about 1854. To them were born fourteen children, Arthur, Patrick, William, Michael, Thomas, John, Alice, Margaret, Elizabeth, Johanna, Beatrice, Thomas, Mary and Catherine. Beside working his farm Thomas was a mason.  He helped in the building of the old St Mary's church at St Cloud.  He died in 1900.  Mary, our grandmother, died in 1909. They are both buried in St Patrick's Cemetery at Melrose, Minnesota.

Patrick went to Chicago where he became an engineer. He was engaged in that work in Chicago until his death in 1939.

Thomas  and John died when young.   Another son Thomas died when an infant.  Arthur settled on a farm in Getty Township, where he still lives.  William and Michael went to North Dakota and lived on a ranch.  William is still there but Michael went back to Minnesota.  He is on a farm in Stearns County.

Margaret, Alice, Beatrice, Catherine, Elizabeth and Johanna went to Washington.  Johanna, now Mrs. E. J. Jessup is now in California.  Elizabeth, Mrs. William Hallinan, died in Seattle, Washington several years age.  Beatrice, Mrs. Ben Hadley, died as the result of an automobile accident in Portland, Oregon in 1932. Alice, Mrs. Don Manning died in Seattle, in 1931.  Margaret, now Mrs. E. A. Muller, lives in Seattle Washington.  Catherine, now Mrs. C.  Hoffmeier, lives in Bellingham, Washington.

Mary Ann, our mother was born August 22, 1875,  in the State of Minnesota.  She was baptized September 26, 1875,  in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, at New Munich, Minnesota, by Rev. Barndl O.S.B. Her sponsors were, Edward Graham and Johanna Graham. She lived at home with her parents until June, 1897, when she married to William F. Donohue. She is a member of, the Christian Mothers of Holy Angels's Church, Daughters of Isabella, Women Catholic Order of Foresters, and Daughters of Erin.  She has always taken an active interest in these organizations. She has been an excellent example of what a good Catholic Mother should be.  A great deal of her free time was always devoted to charities.  She made friends easily and kept them.  There never was a task too big for her to undertake.  Her first thought has been for her family, their health, happiness and well-being was her primary thought.  She has been like a mother to many young people outside her family.
