In an effort to trace Joseph and Charity Jane Hills, the following appeared in the Civil War records concerning the service of Joseph Reuben Hills.  I am attempting to trace Joseph to his birth place, Jefferson County, New York.  These affidavits give a few clues about Joseph's family, particularly whatever can be made of the McAuleys and niece Lavina Kernes.  I cannot find these names in Jefferson County.  I did find Joseph R. Hills in the 1850 census.  I do not know if that person is the same as Joseph R. Hills referred to in these affidavits.
