   KLEYTER

John George Kleyter was born around 1836 in Germany.  He came to the United States in 1860 or 61 and settled in Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin.  On November 3, 1866, he married Louisa Ursula Charlotta Kayser in Madison.  She was the daughter of Theodor and Johanna Francixs Fischer Kayser.   Louisa was born in 1838 in Frechen, Germany and came to the United States with her parents in 1856.

John died September 9, 1872 at age 36 of "hardening of the liver" which was found at his autopsy.  He received a pension following the Civil War because of his condition.  His capture by the Confederate forces and treatment during the time he was a prisoner was a factor in his illness.  He and Louisa had two daughters.

After John's death, Louisa married his brother Henry John Kleyter in Madison on December 20, 1875.  They were the sons of George and Madgalena Steinbrenner Kleyter.  The name is sometimes spelled Kleider or Kleiter and once was found as Clyder.  Records show that Henry was born in Wurtemberg, Germany on May 26,1839 and came to America and Madison in 1869.  He and Louisa had five daughters.

Louisa died October 21, 1887 at age 48 in Madison.  Sometime following her death, Henry and the daughters moved to Storm Lake, Iowa.  His obituary states that he ran a saloon after he moved to Storm Lake in 1892.  After all the girls left home, he eventually moved to Kankankee, Illinois and made his home with the youngest daughter Marie.  He was living with her family at the time of his death on Thursday, December 4, 1913, aged 74 years.  John, Louisa and Henry are all buried in Calvary Cemetery in Madison, Wisconsin.

6)  A son Adolph died at birth or at a very young age, but the dates of this are not known.

7) Anna also died as an infant in Madison.  She was the youngest.  Louisa died shortly after this and Henry took the 7 girls to Storm Lake to live.  One source said this was around 1892.  They had moved back and forth between Storm Lake and Madison in previous years before Louisa's death.

John Kleyter was a baker during this time in the Union Army during the Civil War.  He also listed this as his occupation on his marriage certificate in 1866.

Henry was a laborer but after Louisa's death and the family's move to Storm Lake, he ran a boarding house.  As the daughters began to leave, he sold it and bought a harness shop.  When he became too old to run it, he sold it and went to Kankankee to live with daughter Marie.  His obituary does state he ran a saloon.

It is believed there are other Kleyter sons, but records have not been found to prove this as yet. (Taken from Genealogy prepared by members of the Kleyter familie as received from Joanne Salz Dyke Andras)
