I served on the Chicago from 1967 to 1970 in E-Division. It was directly after IC A school at the Great Lakes when I reported aboard. She had just gotten back from her first Westpac cruise and was tied up at Pier India on North Island when I first saw her. What an experience, one I'll never forget. I was with her for just over 3 years, and I went with her on two Westpac cruises....her 2nd and 3rd. It was Capt. Cox, later Capt. De Largy in command. As well as Juneau, Alaska & Seattle, I was with her in Korea after the Pueblo seizurer. It was there where we got the Meritorious Unit Commedation. My memories of the Chicago will always be sweet. I am proud to have been a part of her life. Its just sad to realize she was scrapped and not part of some Naval history museum or in Chicago or something. It has been 26 years since I left her in San Diego. Since then I went back to school and now I'm a manager at a CPA firm in New Jersey. There are only a few people who I can talk to about thoses years, not many are even interested. Fortunately, I still keep in touch with some of my old shipmate. I glad to have been a part of it all.
