From: "Claire L. My husband, Rufe Logan Grubbs, served aboard her from February 1940 until December 1942. I have a photo which is possibly the engine room crew with last name IDs on back of photo. also his service record which records the dates of his various assignments. When he was transferred from the CHICAGO it was to attend diesel school on the East Coast. He had enlisted in the Navy in December 1935 and retired in August 1955 as an ENC. and then 1965 from the Fleet Reserve. He died in June 1990. I have read only one other account of the ships leaving Pearl on December 5, which happened to be my husband's birthday so it was a date he remembered, not just for his birthday. It was rather coincidental that I grew up in Chicago and we met in Long Beach, California where I was stationed at the Long Beach Naval Hospital as a WAVE PhM. Again, thank you for the history of this great ship. Claire L. Grubbs
