Hello Rob, My name is Jerry Goldsmith. I found your page about the Uss Chicago CG-11. I just wanted to let you know I was given my fist orders to join the assembling pre-commission detail at 32 nd Street Naval Station in San Diego, Ca. I was a young "MMFA" fresh out of "A" school at Great Lakes. I was mess cooking at the 32 nd street messhall when I was assigned to fly up to Hunters Point Naval shipyard with about 50 of us to start hauling gear aboard the ship while she is was still "on the blocks" and painted soild "Red Deck". Being a Machinist Mate "Striker" I was assigned to a "Yardbird" and was shown the "Bilges" from where I worked my way up to MM2 (2 years 2 Month) and was dicharged from her on June 30 1967. I would like to know if there is a list of all the "Plank Owners" for the "Chi-town". If so please let me know. Your doing a great job on the page, keep it up. Yes Robb, you have my permission to post my letter on your page, it would be great to get a group of "plankers" together. I am glad to see that you did at least see where the "Snipes" hung out. Did anyone tell you about the port TARTER launcher getting blown off by a missle that failed to leave the launcher. A twiget opened the hatch to unlock the launcher or something of that nature, when it fired off and the hatch was not totally secure and the flame went down the passage way and set Rear Adm Goodfellow's state room on fire.??? What a shakedown cruise that was. To get a transfer, the only way "die or discharge". Later Jerry
