Let's Rock

photo

Here's a photo of me from around 2002, taken at Herman's Hideaway, when I played with a band called Charon Blue. Some of y'all don't know I used to play rock. I took a sabbatical from that to learn songwriting, so I've only been playing acoustic. I love playing acoustic, but I also want to form a rock band. Have you heard of The Church? (That's a band, not a religion.) That's the sound I'm going for in the rock band. Here's a youtube video of their song "Louisiana" so you can see what I mean.

"Rob writes songs that are alternatingly sarcastic, self-aware, and heartfelt. He delivers lines with a kind of guarded openness. In one moment he may be cursing the world for all its faults, in the next admitting that the faults he sees in the world are really his. This may sound like heavy stuff but he won't let the moment stand too long before cutting the whole thing apart with some sly observation that leaves you laughing aloud. He's a rock 'n roller and raconteur with an acoustic guitar." --Tim Riordan
You are so original it hurts." --Natalie Illeana

What They're Saying About "Me"

"...wittily sarcastic, poignantly emotional, and humorously edgy, with moments of beauty and grace and sadness and reflection." --Patrick Nagel

"...paints pictures of lost lovers, dreams of adventures, little girls emerging as women, and guys seeking their own niches in a tough world." --Sam Kunkle

"...funny in a self-deprecating way, reminds me lyrically of Greg Brown [and singing style] reminds me of John Gorka." --Dayna Scott

"...lyrical style is clever and insightful, with a strong sense of song structure and likable original melody lines." --Ken Langford

"Roper's literate pop/folk tunes are furnished from the same emotional stores we shop at. The songs look like us and ask 'Is this me?' And by implication is this you? Is this what you intended in your life?" --Melle Johnson

"Rob is the troubadour of the misfit...and bless him for it. He has the voice for those of us who ran into road construction on the highway to life's grandest hopes and dreams. Rob sings of the humor and disappointment most of us encounter on our less than perfect journeys through this life. But even when the subject matter turns the darkest, even in his bleakest laments, there is a human voice of solidarity and of hope showing at the edges of the despair...the kind of hope and solidarity that could actually save a life. Rob's best tune on the album is 'You Could Have Had Me.' If it isn't speaking to a universal for the rest of us less than winners, then what the hell is music for? Buy his EP and listen to it when it when it actually matters...when you need a little hope at the edges of your darkness." --Kurt Loken

Producer News

Elli Gauthier and I are about halfway through recording her record. It will probably have 10 songs. We've had some great musicians in the studio recording, and are having fun being creative and trying new approaches to the instrumentation. Elli has a some great songs. You know a song is great when it keeps running through your head for a week. At least 3 of them have done that to me. We're on a 2-month hiatus now while the recording engineer is on the road serving as the sound man for the Denver-based NewGrass band Oakhurst. Here's Elli's website with her demo recordings if you'd like to hear them.

"His thoughtful, yet playful tunes invariably have you tapping your foot to the beat. Loves lost, destroyed and found, along with drinking songs like "The Screwup Song" make for a great evening of entertainment." --KG Morris
"Rob Roper's music is filled with wry observations of the world around him and us. He shares his unique viewpoint of personal stories and makes each audience member sit and think...'Hey, I've been through that.'" --Robert Mattson
