Guidelines for current events topic of the week (TOW)

Student should find an article from a daily newspaper, weekly news magazine or internet news site.  Appropriate topics include current news, politics or economic issues on a local, national or international scale.  Most anything from the first section of the newspaper will meet these criteria.  Articles on sports, science or entertainment should not be used.  The small articles in the margins of the paper are too short and should also not be used.

Student should read the article and write a summary paragraph of about 200 words.  It is important that the student use his or her own words when summarizing the article, otherwise it will be considered plagiarism on the part of the student.  In addition, the student should write a short paragraph consisting of his or her opinion and analysis of the article, stating why the particular topic is important and/or what its effects may be in the long term.  Opinion paragraph should be about 100 words.

Completed TOW should be stapled to the original article and turned in on the appointed day.
