American Jr.
Aircraft Historical
Society
The American Jr. Aircraft Company
was founded in 1929 by the legendary Jim Walker in Portland, Oregon.
Portland was, by the time of Jim's untimely death in 1958, the Model
Airplane Capitol of the World American Jr. produced many unique
model aviation products, but is probably most famous for
"The Classics":
The "74" balsa
glider, the "404"
folding wing glider, and the free-flight
rubber powered "Hornet"
.
Even today, however, model pilots
still vie for the coveted "Walker" Trophy. Jim is credited with popularizing
"U-Control", or Control-line flying with the first,
"U-Control" model, the "Fireball
" .
The second incarnation of American Jr. was set in motion by Frank
Macy, also of Portland, Oregon, who began remanufacturing many original
AJ products in the early 1980's. Frank first re-introduced the "Classics"-the
"74", the "404", and the "Hornet", then later on, the "Fireball".
The American Jr. Aircraft Historical society was established in the mid-1980's by Gordon Walker, nephew of AJ's Jim Walker, and Frank Macy. Among the missions of the society is the promotion of model aviation as an important element of American culture, particularly in the education of young people.
