Targeting Autism : What We Know, Don't Know, and Can Do to Help Young Children With Autism and Related Disorders - Shirley Cohen - copy 1
A highly recommended general first reader book, well written, and pretty painless.

Targeting Autism : What We Know, Don't Know, and Can Do to Help Young Children With Autism and Related Disorders - Shirley Cohen - copy 2
Let Me Hear Your Voice - Catherine Maurice - copy 1
What is all this ABA stuff about? Maurice describes it in a first hand experience with this "bio" type book. Many say they just couldn't put it down. A definite, "oh my GOD we need to start 40 hours a week of ABA intervention yesterday!" book to get you boosted in motivation.

Let Me Hear Your Voice - Catherine Maurice - copy 2
Teaching Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities - Sundberg & Partington - copy 1
Here's how to teach your child to communicate in the store, at home, in school via a Discrete Trial/Pivotal Response Training way. Easy to follow, common sensical, lots of good ideas, a little on the advanced side.

Teaching Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities - Sundberg & Partington - copy 2
It's so good I have a second copy. Need I say more?

ABLLS - The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills - Partington & Sundberg
A wonderful way parents, teachers, aides can assess your child every 6 months to a year. Shows a graphical chart of progress. Great for ideas on IFSP goals & evaluation criteria. For beginner, younger children with few beginning skills (so they don't fall off the scale).

Behavioral Intervention for Young Children With Autism : A Manual for Parents and Professionals - Maurice
This is a very, very dry book but an absolute must read immediately after either Targeting Autism or Let Me Hear Your Voice. The bestest professionals in the field give you almost all the "basic" understanding of ABA you'll need to continue on your long journey of learning about autism and ABA.

Teaching Developmentally Disabled Children: The Me Book - Lovaas
Dated but still good. Very palatable for parents, easy reading, chock full of good, common sense strategies. A good companion to Maurice's Behavioral Intervention.

First Step Notebook - Lee
This is the notebook I got from going to Sharone Lee's Threshold classes (only 2 of the 3). She will be posting the notebook on the web in the near future. The URL is above (click on First Step Notebook). A general overview of autism, causes, vitamins, the education system, power struggles, how to evaluate your child, define problems (ie behavioral, working with school system), and lots more. What the Oregon school system doesn't want you to know. A must have resource.

A Work in Progress : Behavior Management Strategies & A Curriculum for Intensive Behavioral Treatment of Autism - Leaf & McEachin
Strategies and specific goals you can work on. Much like Behavioral Intervention without all the background info.

How to Teach Pivotal Behaviors to Children with Autism: A Training Manual - UCSB
A hands on guide for parents, babysitters, teachers, sibling, grandparents, and everyone else as to the general principals of PRT. Very easy to read with lots and lots of real-life examples and critiques.

Don't Shoot the Dog - Karen Pryor
Haven't read this book yet but it got excellent reviews on amazon.com (the only people that didn't give it an excellent rating were the ones who ordered the book actually thinking it was only about dogs.

How to Teach Self-Management to People with Severe Disabilities: A Training Manual - UCSB
Excellent guide, easy reading with concise examples of teaching self-management skills to children about 5 and older (like wearing an alarm watch to remind them to interact with other children and self rewarding after giving themselves tokens for specific good behaviors).

Understanding Why Problem Behaviors Occur: A Guide for Assisting Parents in Assessing Causes of Behavior and Designing Treatment Plans - UCSB
Haven't read this slim guide yet but I'm sure it is great.

A Model for Parent-Professional Collaboration - UCSB
I think Oregon needs to read this one. What should happen between parents and all professionals working with your child.

Increasing Success in School Through Priming: A Training Manual - UCSB
Why not preteach quickly and in a non-stressful way the day before? How to get that kid to pay attention in circle and more.

Toilet Training for Children with Severe Handicaps: A field Manual for Coordinating Training Procedures Across Multiple Community Settings - UCSB
Haven't read it but I'm sure it's great.

Toilet Training for Individuals with Autism and Related Disorders - Maria Wheeler
This book gave me the confidence to get my child potty trained by getting rid of diapers, hiring a 7 hour a day therapist over summer, and picking a chosing the techniques in the book.

Teach Me Language: A Language Manual for children with autism, Asperger's syndrome and related developmental disorders - Freeman
Haven't read this but available for borrowing in the Corvallis area.

Functional Assessment and Program Development for Problem Behavior : A Practical Handbook - O'Neill, Horner, Albin
I felt that other than some basic info on Functional Assessments, this booklet was geared towards older kids (about 7 and older) and adults. It is very dry but if you want the straight poop (no pun intended) on how to analyze unappropriate behaviors and start dealing with them, here is where you go.

JASH, Journal of the Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps, Vol 24, No 3, Fall 1999
What I call part 2 (a very important update) to Koegel's
How to Teach Pivotal Behaviors to Children with Autism: A Training Manual

Autism Treatment Guide - Gerlach
A nice overview of autism and treatments available. Small booklet, very packed with stuff for the parent that just got the "A" diagnosis.

Social Stories and Comic Strip Conversations - Unique Methods to Improve Social Understanding (VHS tape and booklet) - Gray
Highly, highly, highly, highly, highly (need I say more?) recommended by both Structured Teaching AND many ABA proponents. A way to "show" or "explain" appropriate social behaviors and more. Can use even on smaller 3 year olds and up.

The Complete IEP Guide : How to Advocate for Your Special Ed. Child - Siegel & Stewart
A good general guide to IDEA and the stuff that should be in an IFSP.

Creating a Win-Win IEP for students with Autism - Fouse & Zysk
I like this one, it has a chart that compares some state-to-state differences, general IDEA law, and stuff that shoudl be in an IFSP.

Right from the Start : Behavioral Intervention for Young Children With Autism : A Guide for Parents and Professionals (Topics in Autism) - Harris & Weiss
Sadly enough, I haven't read this one yet.

Activity Schedules for Children With Autism : Teaching Independent Behavior (Topics in Autism) - McClannahan & Krantz
A very good, easy to read, short book on scripting for social behaviors and more. Highly recommended. Written by a couple of friendly, extremely intelligent, caring professors from PCDI.

Special Diets for Special Kids - Lewis
A big huge must for anyone that is going to do a gluten and/or casien free diet. Background info on what happens to the system and a bunch of good receipes.

Biological Treatments for Autism & PDD : What's Going On? What Can You Do About It? - Shaw
Dry but very thorough on the biological reasoning for aggrevating/causing autism and some things you can do about it.

Children with Autism - A Parents Guide by Michael Powers NA
Books by Geraldine Dawson (UofW, one on one a must in order to create eye contact in order to learn) NA
Pivotal Response and Natural Language Teaching Paradigm "Seminars in Speech & Language" Vol 19, No 4, 1998 NA
Ba Ba Ha Ha by Zim NA
