Eligibility Requirements and Application
Do I have to be a teacher to live at Teachers?
Although many retired educators live here, it is not a requirement for eligibility. Our community includes people from diverse backgrounds and careers.

What are the eligibility requirements?
Teachers Park Avenue Residence provides housing designed for men and women 55 and older. Teachers Park Avenue Residence does not discriminate in its resident selection process on the grounds of race, color, creed, religion, sex. national origin, disability, public assistance status, marital status, familial status or sexual preference.*

How do I apply?
We ask that the applicant(s) come in person, if possible, to tour the building. If you have not already done so, this is easily arranged by calling our Administrative Office. At the conclusion of the tour we will be pleased to offer you an Application form and a copy of our Admission Guidelines. Call 612-871-4574 to arrange your tour and receive a free gift today.

Eligibility Checklist
Our mission is to enhance the lives of older people by providing services and an environment which contribute to an independent, healthful, meaningful and secure lifestyle. The following ten criteria are intended to serve as a guide in determining applicants' ability to reside at Teachers Park Avenue Residence:

Medical back to top
Is aware of own medical condition. Is able to follow physician's orders and seeks medical attention as needed. Arranges for own medical appointments. Adaptive equipment such as hand rails, raised toilet seats, and self-administered oxygen is permitted. Individuals must be able to care for and properly use equipment independently. Other medical equipment which may deviate from the above will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Applicant must be able to order and arrange for delivery of his or her own medications, and be responsible for proper self-administration of them. Otherwise, medications may be administered through  Assisted Living Services if directed by an applicant's physician.

Nutrition back to top
The Food Service serves lunches and dinners prepared on site seven days per week in our dining room. If not planning to use this service regularly, applicant must be able to make appropriate arrangements to buy groceries and to prepare adequate meals.

Mobility back to top
Is able to get around freely and safely without endangering self or others. Must be able to safely use cane, walker, or wheelchair if applicable. Does not have a history of frequent falls.

Housekeeping back to top
Housekeeping is provided every other week. Arrangements for laundry can be made through the Assisted Living Services. Resident should otherwise be able to maintain own apartment free from safety, fire, and health hazards.

Personal Care back to top
Is able to dress neatly and appropriately, and is able to perform own grooming tasks. A Beauty/Barber Shop is available in the building. If incontinence is a problem, the applicant must be able to manage it in a healthy, clean manner not offensive to others.

Finances back to top
Is able to manage own finances independently, or has made adequate arrangements for assistance with financial and personal business matters.

Transportation back to top
Is able to provide or arrange for own transportation.

Safety Precautions back to top
Is aware of and practices basic safety precautions. Is capable of reading and following provisions of the Resident Handbook regarding safety and emergency procedures.

Social Interaction back to top
Is able to communicate with residents and staff effectively. Should exhibit a willingness to participate in the life of the building to a reasonable extent.

For Couples Applying for Admission back to top
In some situations one person may meet the above criteria but the other may not. While we reserve the right to evaluate any situation individually, we will seek to accept the couple for admission if the independent person is capable of and assumes the role of caregiver, and if adequate and appropriate arrangements for the provision of care are made.

Teachers Park Avenue Residence is owned and operated by Teachers Homes, Inc., a non-profit organization, which reserves unto itself:

  • The exclusive right of accepting or rejecting any applicant for admission. Teachers Park Avenue Residence does not discriminate in its resident selection process on the grounds of race, color, creed, religion, sex, national origin, disability, public assistance status, marital status, familial status or sexual preference.
  • The power to make such changes or exceptions in admissions policies from time to time as it may deem advisable.


*This is in accordance with provisions in our Articles of Incorporation, Article II (page 26 of the Teachers Homes, Inc. Board manual).
