Teachers Park Ave Residence salutes the Rev. Patricia
Carter, a resident recently featured in the Star Tribune as an "outstanding
volunteer." Pat, who moved to Teachers in 1992, came from a family that "has
a long history of living their faith by helping others," says the Rev. Joe
Grubbs, senior pastor, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in
Minneapolis. Her parents were active members of the congregation and well
known for helping people in need. John Carter, Pat's brother, directed a
church-supported camp in Paraguay for 35 years. When a dictatorship kept
him from talking about his faith, he developed a puppet ministry to carry
on his work. Pat's sister, Joan, served in the State Department in Thailand,
Brazil, Uraguay, and Israel.
Patricia Carter taught elementary school before attending Drake Divinity
School in 1953 in Des Moines, IA. She received her Master of Divinity Degree
and became an ordained minister in the Disciples of Christ Church. She served
as an associate pastor at churches in the Midwest, California, and
Virginia.
While in Argentina in 1963 to attend her brother's wedding, Carter was invited
by the church to stay and work. She accepted a post as associate pastor of
the church and co-director of an elementary school. "It was a wonderful four
years of experience," she said. After nearly four decades of ministry, Carter
retired in 1992.
At First Christian Church, she volunteers in the Christian education department
and works with the children's ministry. She has taken church groups to a
camp in Paraguay, where they've renovated and painted buildings and planted
trees.
Pat has served as a member of the Teachers Park Residence Board of Directors
since January 1994, and chaired the Resident Worship Committee from 1994-2000.
"I feel real happiness to be able to share with people what's come to me
through the years. How God has led and blessed me during this time in ways
I never thought possible."
