I've been sewing since I was a child, my
mother having been my first teacher. I really began making cloth dolls
when
I made my first doll which was a 'mascot' for my husband's business
around 1980 but didn't get really
serious about
it until moving to southern New Mexico in late 1999.
There I founded the 'A Bunch of Softies' cloth doll club in
Las Cruces, NM, which
continues to meet monthly. I now live in Granbury, Texas. I find cloth doll
making to be a
creative outlet and I enjoy the challenges presented when
people request a custom doll.

What I do . . . I design and create one-of-a-kind cloth dolls. No two dolls are the same. All dolls are completely
made of cloth (other than accessories, hair, jewelry, etc.). I will paint
the faces and add things like faux fingernails
to some dolls to give them their
own unique personality. Some dolls are my
own design, some are taken from patterns,
and some are a combination of both.
Dolls can be most any size but I prefer to make them from 12” through about 26”.
How I do It . . . Each doll is approached
differently - some dolls are custom ordered and so I have those
parameters to
follow as much as possible. Other dolls are inspired by anything from a piece
of jewelry to an
interesting fabric to a funny saying -- the list is endless
Why I do it . . .
As a child I played with paper dolls quite a
bit and would draw and cut out clothes for them.
I also had ’regular’ dolls
with which to play. As an adult I would do some sewing for my 3 sons in the way
of
clothes and perhaps a rag doll or two. My youngest son’s favorite doll was named ’Georgette’ and he hauled it
around everywhere! When my
husband started his business I made a cloth doll mascot named 'Monez' and she
would be dressed according to the current season or
holiday. I also started making a variety of cloth dolls and
would display and
sell them at various craft shows in our city. Just as this was getting started
my husband and
I retired to a small town in southern New Mexico, and needing
something to do I took up doll making seriously.
Since then we have
relocated to Granbury, Texas where I continue to create cloth dolls. My style has changed
through the years and I now enjoy making ’art’ dolls and ’over the top’ dolls.
