Choose character race and gender. All races recognized by the Players Handbook are available to any class.  However some races are better suited to certain classes.  Gnomes, for example are excellent wizards.

The races are:

Human - Basically, just like us.  A PC can have whatever racial characteristics the player decides are appropriate. 

Dwarf - Short, stocky, bearded.  Dwarves are underground delvers, skilled in mining and stonework.

Elf - Thin and long-lived, the Elves co-exist with the forest and woodland creatures.  

Gnome - tinkers and builders. Distant kin to the Dwarves.  most gnomes prefer to live in the rolling hills with their own kind. 

Half-elf - Offspring of Elves and Humans and found in both Human and Elven lands.  Not a true race, but occurs often enough to be a character.

Half-Orc - Offspring of Orcs and Humans and usually found on the border between Human and Orc lands.  Like Half-Elves, not a true race, but occurs often enough to be a character.

Halfling - Small, thin, and curious. Halflings are 3-foot tall versions of Humans.
