Deities

In D&D, deities are often seen as the purview of the clerics, and no one else needs to worry about worshiping a god.  If someone else does, it's because they get some bonus from the worship.

In real life, all walks of people worship gods, and use their faith to determine the decisions in their lives.  Characters can use the same concept whether they are a fighter or a wizard.

One of the most interesting characters I've played was a wizard who worshipped a god from a different pantheon than the rest of the party, and religiously (pun intended) followed the strictures of his deity.   No killing on holy days became really interesting when the party was chased across a desert, and the only wizard in the party will not cast spells because god forbade it on holy days.

There are 2 excellent tomes of the Forgotten Realms pantheon, Faiths & Avatars and Powers & Pantheons. You can buy these on Amazon.com.  Additionally, there are gods in the Krynn, Greyhawk, Al-Quadim, Birthright, and Mystara pantheons.

This myriad of deities is beyond the scope of this work. To reduce the volume, information here is limited to talking to your DM about what the pantheon will be in your campaign, and pick a god that suits your character.

M. J. Young, whose First Edition Character Creation site provided so much guidance and a fair amount of text for this one, has  a comprehensive list of deities to review.  you can get his deities site here.
