Notes for Melvin Lafayette BRIGANCE I: 09/10/2001 From Brigance Genealogy: Melvin Lafayette Brigance changed his name, and sides during the Civil War. His final name was Melvin L. Brigham. Melvin L. Brigance's Confederate military record states "Deserted to the enemy 09/10/1863, the same date he entered the Union Infantry as Lafayette M. Brigance. He was 33 and enrolled at Dardenell, Arkansas in the 2nd Arkansas Union Infantry, AR Co. D. 09/10/1863 for 3 years. He is described as blue eyes, red complexion and born in Carroll County, Tennessee. There is a note in Lafayette M.'s military record stating "Also M.L. Brigance & W.S. Brigance" He must have changed to Brigham about that time. Later in the 1870 census he is listed as Marquis L. Brigham.
