Children of John HOUSTON

1. John1 HOUSTON was born Abt. 1780 in NC. He married (1) Martha WILSON October 23, 1802 in Lincoln County, North Carolina1. She was born Aft. 1776 in NC, and died Abt. 1804 in Lincoln County, NC. He married (2) Jane D. PATTON October 28, 1805 in Lincoln County, North Carolina2. She was born Abt. 1780 in NC, and died Bet. 1850 - 1860 in Henderson County, TN.

Notes for John HOUSTON:

05/05/1998

John married twice, Martha Wilson first, then Jane Patton. This is deducted from the records of "Marriage Bonds of Tyron & Lincoln Counties, NC" by Curtis Bynum. In this record, both marriages, surety was by Jno. (John) A. Wilson.

It is believed that John HOUSTON and his family moved from NC to TN between 1820 and 1822. If this is OUR John, whose wife Jane accompanied him, I believe his children were Martin and Wilson and others. I also believe he died before 1830, and his son Martin died before 1850.

There is a John HOUSTON enumerated in Madison County in 1840 who lists his age as between 40 & 50. Our John was married in 1802 and in 1805, so this might be no relation.

In the 1850 census both John and Martin are missing.

12/05/1998

In researching the wills of John HOUSTON'S that died in NC, there is no record of our John. Therefore I believe that he, and his family moved on.

From Madison County History of Tennessee, by Goodspeed, 1887, pg. 803:

"The (justice) court met at Alexander's residence until the September term 1822, when the first court house was ready for occupancy. This house was erected by John Houston for which he was allowed (paid) $135. This house stood on the square near the northeast corner and was a log building, one story high, covered with clapboards resting on ridge poles. This building was about 30x40 feet and stood till 1824-1825, when the rapidly increasing population seemed to justify a new court house."

From this same history of Madison County we also learn that an Alexander Patton had the first store in the county, as well as a James Patton

And in addition records there was a John A. Wilson (see above) who married Elizabeth Caruthers on November 6, 1838. There were a number of Wilson marriages in those early years.

Could the Houston, Wilson and Patton families traveled from NC to Madison at the same time?

01/10/1999

From Madison County, Tennessee Court Minutes, Book Two, Page 61, dated May 4, 1829:

"William Draper surrendered guardianship of in heirs of James Payn_ dec and Roderick A. McIntosh was appointed to same. Names of Payn_ children: Catharine, Thomas, James, Blackwell, Martha Edney, Hardaway, Permelia. Posted bond for $250 each child. Securities: James L. McDonad, James H. Rogers, John HOUSTON." This is not our John Houston.

01/10/1999

From Historic Madison, The Story of Jackson and Madison County Tennessee, by Emma Inma Williams, 1946, pg. 390, and is a quote from the Jackson Southern Statesman, May 21, 1831:

"Colonel John Houston of Cotton Grove, either accidentally or on purpose, neglected to remove his spurs before an affray that took place on the porch of Dr. Fenner's store. Houston spurred his enemy 'in the flank and the rears'." This also is not our John Houston.

07/30/1999

In doing more research John nor Jane are enumerated in 1820 in either NC or TN. Since they would have traveled more or less due west, there is no other state where he might have been. They did not seem to have any children after 1819. Possible conclusions are 1) He died before 1820 and Jane is enumerated with another family, which needs to be checked out or 2) They were in transit from NC to TN and were not counted anywhere.

01/04/2000

In reviewing the 1812 muster rolls for the war of 1812 where was not a John Houston that had the rank of Colonel. There were 2 John P. Houston's that served from East Tennessee, one a Brig. Major with White's Brigade of East Tennessee Vols, and the other a Seargant with William's Mounted Regiment E, Tennessee Vols. This would lead one to assume that the title "Colonel" was honorary or it might have been from the War of Independence.

Notes for Jane D. PATTON:

12/05/1998

In researching the wills of NC, there were 3 Jane Houston's that died there, and none of them is our Jane. This would lead us to believe that she died without a will, or did not die in NC.

01/30/1999

From the notes of David Donahue, given to me by Denise Joyner (djoyner@hcol.net):

Jane D. was born, circa 1785, in NC. Died, after 1850. The family of Jane D. Houston is very difficult to interpret. The family first appears in the 1830 census of Henderson County where Jane Houston is head of a household. Her household is recorded between the households of James G. Houston and Joseph Bradford. Census data: Jane Houston 001001-0112011; James G. Houston, 00001-10001; Joseph Bradford, 100001-00001.

Jane Houston is again head of a household in the 1840 census in Henderson County. Census data: 0-010100001. This would give her age as between 60-70. One of the females could have been Emeline (18). The other might be Mary born in 1831. Mary is listed in my genealogy records as the daughter of Wilson Houston, as this is the most likely possibility. Jane would have been 50 and unmarried when Mary was born. Further research will hopefully clarify this problem.

Jane D. Houston again appears as head of a household in the 1850 census where it is noted that she cannot read or write and is a pauper. In this Henderson County Federal Census taken on October 02, 1850 for District #6, household #4, her age is listed as 50 but she must be about 70 because she was recorded as 40-50 in 1830 and 60-70 in 1840. In her household are Emeline Houston (28), Eliza Houston (8) and Jane Houston (8).

(In 1860 they are Emeline Houston, Jane Bradford, and Eliza Bradford.)

Child of John HOUSTON and Martha WILSON is:

2 i. William Wilson2 HOUSTON3, born 1804 in North Carolina. He married (1) Mary Emmaline "Molly" WATLINGTON4 Abt. 1837 in Probably Henderson County, Tennessee; born 1816 in Knox County, TN5; died Bet. 1845 - 1850. He married (2) Margaret "Peggy" (Walker) (Houston) Bet. 1845 - 1850 in Henderson County, TN; born Abt. 1816 in Tennessee6.

Notes for William Wilson HOUSTON:

10/04/1998

1860 Henderson County, TN census:

Wilson Houston, age 54 from NC, with his wife Margaret, age 44 and one son William W. HOUSTON, age 15 were enumerated:

Notes: Here is the exact enumeration

Surname F name age sex race birth dist# page# house#

Houston E.J. 20 F W MS 5 63 380

Houston Emeline 38 F W NC 15 235 1529

Houston Margaret 44 F W TN 5 63 380

Houston Wilson 54 M W NC 5 63 380

Houston Wm. W. 15 M W TN 5 63 380

Emiline was living in District 6 in 1850 with her twin daughters Eliza 8 and Jane 8. Was E.J. who was living with Wilson in 1860 her daughter??

Wilson is a family name, and his age would put him in the same period to be the brother of Martin P. Houson. After Martin died Eliza moved to Henderson County. Could this have been to be near Martin's brother, Wilson?? Eliza's children were all young and she would have needed support. She was enumerated in District 4 which is right next to Wilson in District 5.

02/06/1999

1850 Henderson County, TN census, District #3, House #40 taken on September 13, 1850:

Wilson Houston, age 46 from NC, with his wife Margaret, age 40 from Tennessee. With them was Elizabeth Walker, age 23, from TN, Johanna Walker age 17 from TN and a younger female, Sarah Walker, age 6, from TN. Also enumerated were the children of Wilson all born in TN; Emily 11, Mary 9, Jane 7 and William 6.

Wilson listed his age as 46 in the 1850 census which would give him a birth year of 1804, right in line with being the son of John and his first wife Martha Wilson.

Children of John HOUSTON and Jane PATTON are:

3 i. James G.2 HOUSTON7, born Abt. 1808. He married (Houston); born Bet. 1800 - 18107.

Notes for James G. HOUSTON:

01/01/1999

James G. HOUSTON was enumerated next door to Jane HOUSTON in the 1830 Henderson County, TN census. He was between 20-29 as well as his wife, and had one girl under 5 years.

He should be the second son of Jane.

Also he may have moved to Marshall County where there was a James G. enumerated in 1840 as 111001-012101. Here the parents are between 30 and 40 which might compare to 10 years before in Henderson County.

Census: 1830, Henderson County, TN

4 ii. Martin P. HOUSTON, born Abt. 1809 in North Carolina; died Abt. 18458. He married Eliza Drucilla GARRETT in Probably Tennessee; born Bet. 1810 - 1815 in North Carolina; died Aft. 1860.

Notes for Martin P. HOUSTON:

10/04/1998

1830 Madison County, TN census:

In 1830 Martin Houston lived in Madison County, TN, and according to the census he was between 20 & 30, his wife was between 15 & 20, and he had one child, a daughter under 5, who must have later died in infancy, as she was not on the 1840 census.

1840 Madson County, TN census:

In 1840 Martin Houston was still in Madison County and he lists his age as between 30 & 40, his wife's age as between 20 & 30 and there were two males between 5 & 10, one under 5, and one female under 5. He lists his occupation as agriculture. Most likely he was a sharecropper. In a search of the deed records for Madison County there is no record that Martin P. Houston ever owned land. But there is a deed in 1840 where Louisa HOUSTON et al sold land. Interesting.

In 1850 census the whole family, except for Martin, who was probably deceased, had moved to Henderson County, the next county over. See notes under Eliza.

12/05/1998

Per Robert Taylor at the Jackson-Madison County Library, Tennessee Room, Martin P. HOUSTON did not have a will made in any Tennessee County. Because there are no records of Henderson County, we do not know if they moved to Henderson County before he died or the family moved after he died.

Notes for Eliza Drucilla GARRETT:

10/04/1998

1850 Census for Henderson County, enumerated on 10 September, 1850, 2nd district, house #78:

Eliza WALLS (who lists her age as 32!) has the 7 living children with her and from this census we learn all of their names. Only Mary J. (age 13) and Theophilus (age 9) were listed as attending school, and her oldest son, Henry W. Houston's occupation was listed as farmer.

From this information we can deduct that in a short period of time, 1845 - 1850, Martin had died, Eliza had probably married a Mr. WALLS, and had moved to Henderson County, and Mr. WALLS was no longer living. See note under date 12/05/1998 regarding records from Henderson County.

We believe that she moved her family in near Martin's half-brother Wilson HOUSTON in District #3, Henderson County. She was in District #2, but they were enumerated 3 days apart in September, 1850.

From Madison County, Tennessee Marriages, 1838-1871:

Louisa Walls married Charles H. Nelson on 10/14/1856.

1860 Census for Madison County:

Head of household - Eliza (enumerated as Louisa) NELSON was listed with her age as 45, and Charleston Houston (enumerated as Charlton) age 22, Mary Jane Houston (enumerated as Jane) age 23, Theophilus Houston age 20, John Houston age 18, and James Houston age 16 were all still living with her. In addition her son Robert WALLS age 10 was listed. Eliza was obviously pregnant with Robert at the time of the 1850 census, which gives us a death date for her husband, Mr. WALLS of about 1850. Her third husband, Charles H. NELSON, whom she married in 1856 was enumerated separately, with his own 4 children.

Henderson County Courthouse and its records were destroyed by two fires in 1862 and 1893, and research is difficult, but there has been some attempt through newspaper files to create some of the early records.

01/09/2000

In searching the early deeds for Madison County, I found a very interesting deed transfer: Louisa Houston (et. al.) and Sarah C. Houston (et. al.) sold on 08/19/1840 333 acres. This deed was recorded on 12/07/1842 in book 8, page 433. Must check this out.

In researching the census records for 1840 for Madison County, , pg. 75: Martin Houston, his wife Elisa (Louisa) with 3 boys and 1 girl. Living 4 doors away was Osley Garrett who was 39 years old (from his 1850 census - Gibson County) and he was born in NC. Here are all the Garretts in Madison County at that census:

Pg: 75 - Martin P HOUSTON - 120001-10001 (He is 30-40, she is 20-30)

Pg: 75 - Osley GARRETT - 110001-10001 (He has moved to Gibson County by 1850)

Pg: 73 - William GARRETT - 00001000001-0000000001 (He 80-90, she 70-80)

Pg: 109 - Alfred D. GARRETT - 100011-10010001 (He is still in Madison County in 1850 where he lists his age as 42 and born in TN)

Pg: 105 - David J. GARRETT - 10001-00011 (He is still in Madison County in 1850 where he lists his age as 34 and born in TN)

Pg: 87 - Jacob GARRETT - 110001-11001 (Jacob is still in Madison County in the 1850 Census - he is from VA)

Pg: 74 - Jordan GARRETT - 000001-000001 (Not in TN in the 1850 Census)

Pg: 84 - Keneth GARRETT - 000001-0 (Not in TN in the 1850 Census)

Also in Henderson County in 1840:

Pg: 342 - Nicholas GARRETT - 0221001-3011001 (He is not in Tennessee in 1850)

07/27/2000

If I am right, at least her last son was born in Alabama. James M. Houston, in future censuses states that he was born in Alabama. Why did she sell the land in 1840? James was born in 1845? Was she in Alabama then? It is curious that there were no Walls in Madison County, but plenty in Alabama. This is beginning to look like the family moved to Alabama for a while from about 1840-1845. There were three children born during this period but only James history has surfaced. Theopholius most likely died during the Civil War and John is not yet researched.
